Wild_and_Irish 11
Bought a mink trap a month or two ago but haven't got time to set it down at the river so have been trying a few other uses, had a friend up two weeks ago and decided I'd try it on squirrels since the retreiver had nabbed a few in the yard and they had ruined about £60 of horse mail the year before. I was on holidays for a week there and had the same lad walking and feeding the dogs and checking the trap (tied down to a board nailed between two branches in a massive conker tree, baited with dry dog food stuffed in a bottle cut in half) he checked it every day except Tuesday of this week and I was back yesterday and checked it at 8pm, found the first squirrel caught in it, but very much dead, so this got me wonderin if the dog food could have dehydrated it enough to killl it within 48hrs or if it had a heart attack like a mouse in a glue trap, anybody got any other theories? stubby 175
respect for the quarry is what its all about, if using a live catch trap, check every 24hrs, or every 12 is even better, if you cant check it, dont set it Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
respect for the quarry is what its all about, if using a live catch trap, check every 24hrs, or every 12 is even better, if you cant check it, dont set it It was a mix up in times that left it unchecked, it was just pure bad luck the squirrel got trapped in between times, I can honestly say it was being checked every day, I think I wll be putting a different bait in next time I set i just to be sure, and I can tell yu it may have been a matter of minutes between me being there And it dying, it was still warm. PS. The reason I haven't used it on mink yet exactly that, respect for the quarry, I don't want to cause any excess suffering by not being fit to check it everyday. Quote Link to post
