Toka 10
Took the little Tyke to the Mushroom farm the other day, just to see if we could root out a rat or get a small bunny in the open fields at the rear of it. Put the shotgun in the car with my gloves and stick and a torch and we were off. As normal Biblo got excited as we arrived and was off as soon as the door opened. Bilbo automatically checks the grain store first now and often spends time trying to will the rats out from between the block walls. Using my torch I thought I might get a look at some of the rats in the space. Sure enough sat about 2 feet inside this gap was a big brown rat, ignoring Bilbo's attempts to get at it. I checked the whole length of the gap and saw a number of rats sat waiting within. They appeared to have their own escape routes either up the gap or under other obstructions inside, as there is quite a bit of electicity around this particular corner with the heaters etc it probably wouldnt be suitable for a water hose. After a few minutes looking I called him away and we carried on looking. Bilbo didn't seem particularly interested, until we passed the doorway of the mushroom drying room. His nose veered down to the metal gangplank that covered the drainage ditch. I got down opposite and shone the torch inside, there sat preening itself was a small rat. I tried to dislodge it using my stick but it ws just too far inside. I got to the opposite end of the metal and left Bilbo at the other end. As i began to lift my end Bilbo, ever inquisitive, left his post to come and see what was happenning at my end, at the same time the rat made a break for it and exited the drain at the point Biblo had been stood. Bilbo saw it leave but was a good few yards away by then. He chased it the 5 yards to another drainage ditch, narrowly missing it as it shot into the covered ditch and away. After checking the rest of the yard with no sucess we got the gun out of the car and headed for a walk down the fields. In the bottom field we found a rabbit and eventually Bilbo flushed it towards me. One in the bag from the bottom chamber! We got back to the car and as I put the gun away and got ready to go Bilbo shot off for a last look around. After calling him he didn't return, which was unusual for him so I went to have a look. As I got level with the building line I saw a rat running out of the second barn followed by Bilbo some 3 yards behind. They both ran up a mound of earth outside and out of sight, Bilbo closing every step. There was a burst of squeeling and then all I could hear was Bilbo shaking the rat. I got there to find a very dead rat and not a bite mark on him. We just need to keep the practice up, he still doesn't like to release them to me though!!! Quote Link to post

Toka 10
8 months now...struggling to get many rats or rabbits at the moment, not many places round here with them. The few that there are are in the fields and tiches atthe moment but our ditches are covered in 20 foot of scrub. Hope as it gets colder they will migrate back to the yards and some of the cover will die off. Think he is coming along though...i am learning as much if not more than him as he is my first terrier, always been into shooting but not so much dogs....wish i had had them a ong time ago!!!!!! ATB and thanks!! Quote Link to post
