grdavison 0 Posted July 8, 2009 Report Share Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) alrite , had me lurcher bitch at the vet she is 11yrs old and has a mammory lump on her belly hanging down, the vet said its gona cost over £500 to remove but cannot guarantee it will not come back she said if not removed it will only get bigger. shotup 9 Posted July 8, 2009 Report Share Posted July 8, 2009 leave it , if you get it removed your dog will be in a bad way for months may even kill it,vets used to say leave em well alone only when they get massive then take them off.i once had a mammory tumour taken off a spanial and it was very poorly for a long time. now if an old dog gets one that goes big best to put dog to sleep to save suffering.taking the off can triggers other tumour to start. spirit 0 Posted July 9, 2009 Report Share Posted July 9, 2009 I had exactly the same problem with my much loved lurcher Fly last year. Although 13 years old she was healthy and active in every other way. Because of her age the vet thought that it wouldnt be fair to put her through an operation. we decided to try to keep her as comfortable as long as she was pain free so they put her on a mild dose of steroids. which incidentally gave her a new lease of life! After 7 months she was still the same but the tumour began to ulcerate and burst every 10 days or so, this was obviously uncomfortable for her. I took her back to the vet who was amazed that she was still fit and active. We had her chest x rayed, as it is common for the cancer to spread to her lungs, her lungs were clear so we had the operation. She recovered and was back to normal within a week. A biopsy showed that the cancer was a very aggressive form and could return so they kept her on steroids. She lived a normal life for another 7 months, went to bed as normal one night, and then couldnt get up the next day, at which point we had no option but to have her PTS. My only regret is that we didnt have her operated on sooner, but hind sight is a wonderful thing. The operation including x-rays cost £350, so it may be worth trying another vet. The steroids cost me about £20 per month. I obviously cant advise you on what to do it depends on finances and how well your dog is otherwise, but I hope this is of use to you. I really do feel for you it is such a hard decision but I am sure you will make the right one. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
