lurcher lass 9
thank you everyone, i had actually stopped looking at this post since only two people had a look its now two weeks since the bite, her knee is now the size of a golf ball, she's still in anti inflamitries is eating and drinking better now, i'm lead walking her twice a day though try telling her she can't run!! i'm not sure if i'll be able to use her as working dog properly again, apart from the odd run but thats ok, will give her time and see if she gets better flexablity on her leg, if not then my girlie can retire to the sofa, be a shame to lose a good working dog but she's a friend first so whatever is best for her i have taken her to see a different vet for a second opinion and he said just what i've told you thanks for the advice, sorry i didn't get back to you before all the best lurcher lass x x
longdog2000 1
Hi sorry ive only just picked up on this thread, I have replied to another thread on adder(Viera berus) bites on here recently. With this amount of time passed I doubt that its the venom causing the swelling,I would put money on the Adder left a fang in the bite site. All vipers and elapids shed their fangs,so at times you will see that they actually have 4 venom delivery teeth(see picture),2 are fixed and functional and 2 are ready for release. When the snake strikes at its next prey item/defense strike these teeth are commonly left in the bite site. The hollow fang will contain dried venom residue, couple this with a foreign body and it will cause prolonged swelling and often heat around the area. The fang wont show on exray, dont even let them try(they will charge you and trust me they wont find it) ,best way is to have your vet clip and shave the affected area and find the bite site, then hot poultice twice a day to try and raise the fang to the surface, for manual removal.Ive had this happen to me a few times, adder(berus) fangs are relativly short so biting through hair considered the fang should be subcutaneus and not to deep. Hope all works out. Edited June 28, 2009 by longdog2000
