FOXHUNTER 5,021
I wasnt going to go out early this morning as Ive been up early twice this week and wanted a lie in. But at 2.30 am I awoke with a pain in my stomach and had to run to the toilet with the runs . As I peered out of the window it looked like being quite a nice morning so as I was already up I decided to go for a wander. I arrived on my ground at 4.45 and once again skirted the boundary. I saw a couple of does in the most likely spot but not the buck I was looking for. I headed back to the car thinking that I had drawn a blank but as I approached the motor I noticed a spiker coming up the hedgerow towards my car. I dropped on the spot , got set up on the bipod and duly dropped this young lad with a shot to the base of the neck. If you look at the gate in the background that is where my car was parked , some drag EH Quote Link to post

Looking at the picture in your signature, and assuming both deer from the same area, could it not be that this young fella still in velvet and 8" may be the buck of the future when he grows up?? Yes the buck is from an area that produces good heads but a buck with 8" single spikes is not really a buck I want to keep. Not when there are plenty of other bucks in this area producing good 6 point heads in their first year. Cheers, Mark. Quote Link to post

Thats interesting never knew they could go from a fawn to a 6 spiker in one year - with all my years of roe stalking one can always learn new things about roe deer Quote Link to post
mj robson 8
Dicehorn, I guess thats the marvelous thing about Roe, they are all different and depending on their feeding they can differ hugely over different areas of the country. I remember seeing a yearlying head at Alan Allison's house a few years back. It was shot on a veg farm along the vale of Stirling where it had good feeding and minerals. It made a silver medal, amazing! I have a Doe on some ground of mine near Cupar in Fife that had triplet bucks last year. I left her in peace when doing my culling this winter but saw them a few times, she is still there with the 3 young bucks, all of which have 6 point heads in velvet when I saw them 10 days ago. Cheers, Mark. Edited May 11, 2009 by mj robson Quote Link to post
