Things got a little CRAZY! Muskrat hunt with mink and dog.

I'll try and get one for you. -
Thanks.

Depends on the mink. Some can be more dangers than others when hyped up. Interestingly, I find that this aggressive buck I call Ine'sa'be (his name means "Black Fire") is actually more trustworthy after a kill. I think its because he has released his aggression and is less edgy and anxious at that point. But there are mink who are more likely to grab you when all pumped with adrenaline.

How Many Rats Can These Mink and Dogs Catch?!?!?
Minkenry replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks! It's in the state of Utah :-) -
I've never even seen a lynx in real life. Maybe at a zoo I guess, but I don't remember if I did. I've seen bobcats at a zoo, but I've never seen them in the wild ether. So I can't really say how hard they are on a dog. I would suppose that they wouldn't be easy, but I couldn't say how hard.

Actually I'm very surprised at how powerful my lurcher's bite is. I'm guessing it must come from the staghound side of her breeding. She can literally crush a large feral cat's skull so the eyes pop out with just a couple crunches! Raccoons are much tougher than cats, and don't typically go down without a good fight. I never really intended for her to be a raccoon dog, I just like to catch a few with her every now and then. I mostly wanted her for working along side the mink, and doing some feral cat pest control, both of which she had done wonderfully at. I'll see about getting a coon video I

I'd love that! I'm afraid they wouldn't like me bringing my mink though...... but maybe if I just brought a "rare black ferret" instead ;-) LOL -

The dog with pointy ears is a dog you've probably seen years ago in some of my older videos. His name is Carl, and he is 1/2 border collie, 1/4 catahoula leopard hound, 1/4 Pharaoh hound. His father (1/2 catahoula 1/2 pharaoh hound) was a hog hunting dog from Hawaii, and his mother (the border collie) was a cow dog. Carl himself is primarily used for hunting raccoons, skunks, and feral cats. When he was younger he spent a lot of time hunting along side my friend Cade and his mink, but when Cade lost his mink he didn't get another, and instead focused on hunting raccoons, skunks, and feral cats -

Thanks! We don't have the rat numbers you have on your side of the pond. We live out in the desert, so anytime we catch more than a dozen in a day, we are pretty excited about it! Never seen a place where you can catch over 100, like I've seen in videos from your part of the world! ' -

Sure, I can do that. With skunks I just kill them with a rock or gun, as my wife HATES it when my dog gets sprayed!

I used to have a video on YouTube that was unlisted, but I couldn't find it so I must have already erased it. Sorry, I'll try to get another one. I don't typically show that stuff off because it can be kind of brutal.

Black is a very common color on the fur farms, but in nature all mink are a dark brown. Yes, mink can be rather tricky to breed. They are VERY aggressive towards each other, so getting them to breed rather than fight can be quite difficult at times.

Yeah he's a wild one! You can train the human aggression out of a mink, but you can't train a mink to have more grit or determination than it was naturally born with. You can boost an animal's confidence, but you can never create confidence that isn't there. Is it more convenient to have a mink that is born with both the way Brocc is? Sure it is! But I'll take a mink who is a great hunter and also wants to eat me, over a mink who is an ok hunter and friendly with people too. I can always make that mean mink nice, but I can never make that average mink great if it doesn't want to be great.

Mink leave their mothers at about 4 months old (around mid August to early September). I'm pretty confident that for their first few months of hunting on their own, they typically stick to easy prey like fish and field mice until around 6-7 months old when the hard times of winter push them to start hunting more difficult prey. In most situations, muskrats would be very difficult to catch until mid winter, so its not likely that a young mink would have much of an opportunity to start hunting them before 7-9 months old, even if they wanted to hunt them earlier. Around 6-8 months old is when mos

Honestly I'm still trying to answer that question. When is the best age to start hunting biting prey with a mink? I wish I had someone I could ask that could give me a straight answer! Unfortunately I'm still in the process of answering that question through trial and error.Waiting longer than necessary never really hurts a mink, but like with any animal starting them too young can destroy their confidence. I start hunting them on little/none aggressive prey as soon as they are coordinated enough to catch the prey in question. I have a friend whose mink was a super early starter when it c

I have started a new mink project! Meet my newest mink. Brocc- named after the old English word for "badger" because of his big thick head and shoulders and brazenly confident personality. He is a happy-go-lucky 8 month old buck who is super confident and friendly with humans, yet very intense and highly aggressive towards prey. Ine'sa'be- is a highly driven, highly aggressive, 8 month old buck that wants to bite everything that moves! His name means "black fire" in the Omaha Native American language. Thashishi- is an old retired breeder mink from a fur farm. Her name means "
