  1. I would think someone who has trapped alot would know this in greater detail VV. HOW COME THE MINK/ POSSUM SKINS ARE INSIDE OUT Certain animals are put up different ways for grading and drying. Coon, possum are very greasy, once they are placed on a stretcher what is known as a window is cut on the belly side. You can see that U shaped cut in some of the animals. This allows the grader to see what primeness the fur is. By also looking at the hide he can tell if there is damage, late being rubbed early being blue, tick marks holes and how well they were handled. Mink also has a
  2. Went to a fur sale today and took a few pics, this is a small one. opossum Mixed bag of Reds, coons and coyote. more reds, coyote, coon. few mink. here's a few mink. Eat your hearts out. HAHA
  3. I have some Jakes and they are a first class trap. Dogless traps are great once you get used to the setting. The great part about them is when you use a steel screen pan cover you can set it is seconds. Here's a Jake signed by JC himself. If theft isn't a problem I would use the jake or a number three softcatch. I have some that are modded and will get a few pics of them later. I have never heard anything good about the Duke padded jaws. There are kits to do up the Bridgers. www.jcconner.com
  4. Here's some things you asked about. The first is what is known as a Sterling MJ this is a model 500. They have cast jaws and should never be dry fired. here it is set. They will hold most game here in the US mostly used in for fox and coyote. Here's a Belisle 110 take a look at the jaws. They kill on the spot and I have had some coon by the foot and not on puprose. Here's what 400 micros locks look like. Rich Kasper sells these and he does ship over seas also. here is a MJ 500 in action, A good friend of mine made this catch.
  5. No I don't think things are green over in your part, just asking questions and trying to show what tools we have. So your allowed a non locking AKA relaxing lock??? Like a washer lock??
  6. You should try something like this, it's a killpole. Fox get's caught, wraps around the pole and dies. Here's and Amburg lock with a 50 pound choke spring. 13 foot snare, they get caught and make a run. Onced choked down the spring keeps the pressure on. Basic snare, you guys don't load your snares?? Here it is with a 12 foot lead. these can be set in seconds with a good support. I like vinyl tube on the snare and then bang your done and down the road. If you have all your spots mapped out a guy could put in 150-200 in a day.
  7. Speed dip is not flamable until you add the gas, But if you want a nice coat try using Coleman lantern fuel. Me I like a hot pot of wax, just when is starts to smoke, drop trap in and let it get hot. You'll be amazed at the speed and how well it protects the trap. As for the old time traps. A light coat of rust and using them always helps. After this week i will post a few pics of preped traps.
  8. I would say many trappers here in the US die and wax there traps, If anything wax. It speeds them up and seals them. After a catch some change out there trap while others just keep setting it. I feel it might come down to your soil versese are's. Some say it's less acidy, I don't know but most traps set here in the last 100 years have been waxed. Today some paint there snares, speed dip there water traps, there is another latex product out also. But a large percentage stil wax footholds and dip body grippers due handling them with wax it's a nightmare. Hope this helps
  9. Do you guys Die and Wax your traps or speed dip them??
  10. No but here's some pics of a Bridger Number 2 modified. Here's a KB, built in shock spring.
  11. Just wondering what they are. Pics a bonus.
  12. Here's another one Great bait maker. Here's one of the Best coon trappers in the US. Looks will fool ya with this guy. He's a hard charger. Jag working a coyote I'll give the names out later since someone PM'd me telling me they know all them folks. And A thanks to JM for the pics. Hope you enjoy.
  13. Are those boards for beaver pelt Nightrunner? NO The big board in the front is for otter, the ones behind that would either be racoon or fox. Beaver are skinned and stretched round. Here's a pic to a supplier, this is a beaver hoop. The pelt is hooked on with what is know as a hog ring. It is U shaped, one hook on the outside of the pelt and the other goes on the hoop. Then the hoop is opened to the right tension and the bolt is tightend. This link will give you a basic idea on how most fur is put up. http://traps4kids.com/Furhandling.html This are not the methods I use but
  14. HMMM, AHH Here's one of my suppliers. Local guy. Very big into make lure.
  15. I'll stop my input on this. VV Let's face it I posted pics of some famous trappers you made mention but don't even know who they are. But for you English Men those are some of the bigger longline trappers in the US. That is not something you can just side step, there the men that forge there way trapping every day. NO MATTER WHAT. But like I said I am proud to call many of them my friends.
  16. Doesn't look familiar.....but sure I've heard of Red O'Hearn and Phil Brown and Don Bolte and The Leggets and Bud Hall and Craig O Gorman and Marty Stenecker and the late Pud Long etc, etc ,etc,..............Duh? You see anyone who has gotten an O'gorman catalog has heard of these names. Phil happens to be on trapperman. Many of the people you made mention I am proud to say they are my friends. Like Marvin and Leslie I am sure you know them also. Don't think that there aren't any women out there either. I am sure you can name a few of these guys then also.
  17. I snare and I am proud to say it. It is a lethal and humane way to harvest game or predators if done correctly. I have snared over 10,000 animals and have never harmed one hunting dog or pet cat. do you realize that there are guys in Iowa that snare from 600 to close to a thousand 'coon every year? Yes I do and for a long liner in Iowa, The men that put up the big numbers are all know, Bolte, O'Hearn, Kasper, Steyers, Layton, Anderson, Gibb...... Seems there are guys out there doing it. But one thing is trappers have heard there name before. I am sure you have a picture somewhere
  18. Anyone who has trapped for the last 30 years and ivolved in trapping as much as you claim then this would be common knowledge. You make claims on Trapperman.com that you retired to the Grand Turks Island Bahamas but your still working. A family member was a very well known trapper. Who might that be?? If you could post a few pics of these 10K snared animals, any Walmart will take a paper pic an make it digital. Now I want you guys to understand something here, if a trapper makes a 10 thousand animal catch most trappers at some piont and time will hear about it. But when one says snare
  19. It's not that easy to explain in a few sentences, the organizing members of the NTA treated themselves to first class airfair, hotels, they even racked up credit card debt for the NTA and they are trying to play it off now. Once word got out on the street, the membership has been dropping, the magazine went from 12 months to 10 and now quartly. The funds are dwindling and they are lossing membership every month.
  20. I never trapped a furbearer for the sake of letting it go. That video cost the NTA close to 500 thousand to make an nearly bancrupted the NTA. It also was the biggest mistake they have ever made causing many members to never pay there dues again. It was one of the bigest scandels in the NTA ever. Not to mention they hired the old Vice Pres of the Humane Society. David Wills. I feel you guys should also understand we harvest animals here for the fur. Yes some do control work out west, but trapping is not like trout fishing. Catch and release. You should have a better understanding of what
  21. Lads; I've long since heard of holes and 'Bottom Edge' sets. I'd Love to try such things out. But my hands are tied by my adopted countries legislations. I have to stay legal. You can't use a Body gripper under water????
  22. Most guys use rat traps for weasels today, they KO em. Check out this link for all the weasel info ever som of the best written. Weasel Trapping
  23. Just dig a very small hole on top of the bank about 18" deep protect it with a snare. Toss in some feathers it will take every mink there. Same set with snow cover. Study this picture, look to the right there is a srop in the bank, my snare is right on the edger with a few sticks to block it. As you can see this spot has yeilded a few.
  24. Moley you are 100% right I did throw my dummy out. When purchasing urine there are many types that people sell and doctor up also. Adding water glycirine and such. Pure fox urine is the color of black coffe, that has been meat fed. It is best collected from late Oct to mid March. Cathing rabbits in steel traps is due to poor urine and light pan tension. Take a gallon of over the counter urine and freeze it you'll see. Many trapping items here in the US are just a bunch of bunk. Few don't know what they are buying or for that matter what they are talking about. Part 2 Here in
