    Thanks for your advice Terrierman Sam and I totally agree with what you said about the bonding issue. Maybe if we work my dad's dog and a new dog together then the competition might encourage my dads dog? Skycat is the author Penny Taylor right? I've read lots of her articles in CMW and i've heard lots of good things about her. Can you recommend any training books?

    I'm looking to get my first lurcher. My dad has a Beddy x Whippet who is now three. He is a tough dog, in regards to both training and prey drive. My dad has put so much work into him and he still is not exactly perfect. He only does things through sheer repetition during training and he has never shown any desire to please us. He loves hunting but it's all about him. I guess this is the Beddy in him.

     

    He has had a fair bit of lamping experience now and still he does not perform well on rabbits catching maybe 1 in 15 runs. He gets knackered after 10 runs in a night and just does not seem to use his brain or have the speed to catch rabbits reliably. When he does catch a rabbit he is NOT exactly soft mouthed and is pretty bad at retrieving game but great at retrieving his dummies.

    I want my new dog to be biddable. I would like a dog that tries to please me and not him/herself. The dog will be used solely on rabbits, during the day, in the lamp and out ferreting. The dog needs to be fast, as quite often where I lamp you only get short runs and it needs to have a brain.

     

    At the moment I'm thinking a 3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Collie Bitch from Hancock.

     

    I'd like your opinions and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  12. Ferreted rabbit is tough?

    Last winter I ferreted a load of rabbits with a gamekeeper friend of mine in Dorset. On returning to Bath, I enquired at my local butcher (I won't name names), as to whether he would be interested in the rabbits. He replied that yes he would be interested, as long as they had not been ferreted. His reason for this very odd remark was that he believed a ferreted rabbit was terrified upon dying and therefore would be tough once cooked. Now I personally have been eating rabbit for 20 years and my father for 50 years and we both agree this to be nonsense.

    Let's take beef for example. We have all heard of the animal rights activists stating that cattle, on arriving at the abattoir, can sense their imminent death. They are then stunned and while their hearts are still beating have their throats cut. I think you'd agree this must be pretty scary. So are you telling me Mr. Butcher refuses to buy this beef?

    Has anybody else heard of this before? Or has anybody found that ferreted rabbit is tougher? Your thoughts please.

    Here's my 1st cross Beddy/Whippet. He is 18 months and taking rabbit night and day. Everytime we go out he seems to pick something new up and is keen as mustard on all types of game. His faults are that he is very possesive of his prey and that he tires quickly. I am currently working on both of these faults and am making progress slowly. This winter is going to be the making of him I think.

    My 1st cross beddy whippet is 18 months and started taking rabbits at a year. He has a lot to learn still but I think this winter will be the making of him. My advice is to you is to be patient with them, don't be in too much of a rush to get him on any sort of larger game. Good luck!

    Hi All,

     

    My name is Aj from Bath. I have grown up rough shooting and ferreting with my father. I studied game and wildlife management at Sparsholt college and then became an under-keeper for a small pheasant shoot next to Badminton in Gloucestershire.

    I have worked in South Africa, Mauritius, and most recently Madagascar as a conservation biologist.

    I now do a little bit of stalking and fox control with my friend on an estate down in Dorset. I have a 18 month old bedlington whippet (my first running dog), who has just started taking rabbits. I'd really like to go out with him on the lamp more so I’d be grateful if anybody could take me out in the local area.
