lurchergirl2 replied to lurchergirl2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
spot on , but with pup on post it should have been jumping at 10 monts old, not to high but jumping, do as above.1 Bird, she has been jumping since a pup i have not just started with her now at 20mths old!! obv started v small she just doesn't have the enthusiasm for it, my old dog was like described half kangaroo or deer!!, he never hesitated, will try your suggestions, i have a friend with horses so might try her over some show jumps!! think you are maybe right about the collie side, she 5/8th gh x3/8ths collie and has very much the gh build but def a collie mind, maybe this is eff -
jumping reluctance, advice please!
lurchergirl2 replied to lurchergirl2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks she's kept in the house, she will jump fences etc with a lot of encouragement from us, but if she see's something to chase ie rabbits and a fence is in the way and the only way is over she won't jump it she just gives up, this has been a god send in one way as we have a lot of deer around here, it's frustrating as i know as a lurcher she can probably jump great heights with ease!! she's not a big dog only 22ins tts, but that shouldn't matter should it?? -
My new pup who's now 20mths old is showing a reluctance towards jumping obstacles, she seems to prefer to find anyway pos to go under things, for example today we had to pass a fallen tree lying no more than 2.5ft off the floor and instead of hopping over it with encouragement from myself, she crawled uner the gap at the bottom!! do you think she will improve with time, never had a dog behave like this.

tracing litter mates of old dog??
lurchergirl2 replied to lurchergirl2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ok well here's as much info as i have, i bought my dog from a man called Mark near Dewsbury back in 1999, the dog was a collie/gh(hancock bred) x bed/whip( george kelly bred), the bitch was a lovely brown dog and the sire a stunning sandy rough coated. We got the last of the litter abd i believe there were approx 9 pups in the litter, some went over to ireland. My dog was black and tan an unusual colour for his cross. The advert in the cmw was a very prominant one. I know it is a long shot, but if any one on here bought from this litter i would love to hear from you. Trying to think of the vi -
Hi do think it would be possible for me to try and trace litter mates of my old lurcher or am i finding needles in haystacks????
-
you can have straws taken from a dog for about £200 Sadly we lost the said dog in oct 09 to kidney failure, so to late for anything now.
-
thanks stubblebasher and brassneck thats really helpful, our future plan is to have another dog crossed exactly the same as my old dog, i know you can never recreate the same dog and every lurcher is very different, but he really was something special, many people we saw at various lurcher shows thought he had saluki in him as he was tan and black but he didn't he was just an unusual colour. Would have loved to have frozen his sperm to keep for later but it was all to expensive!! I would put up pics of him and my other 2 if i could work out how to get them on!!!
-
thanks bunnys, that interesting, my old dog was hell of a dog, don't think i'll ever have another like him, we always called him a pure killing machine!! He could have got us into a lot of trouble but luckily didn't. He had stamina like i've never seen, Does anyone know of any george kelly dogs still on the go, have a bitch i would maybe like to mate one to if i can find one!
-
lurcher.man, that is a stunning merle dog you have, it is very similar to my black merle, what cross is it and what size if you don't mind me asking??
-
thanks for the replies so far, if he was a dealer and didn't breed them himself he sure knew how to pick a hell of a good looking bed/whippet!!
-
yes i think your right i believe he has passed away now, the dog i had was half hancock, half goerge kelly bred or so it was advertised, that was 11 yrs ago from a man in dewsbury yorkshire, as i said before the george kelly dog was stunning a sandy rough coated.
-
Meant to add would to love hear any info regarding this breeder??
-
thanks, mine get approx 2 hrs a day sometimes more, sometimes less time allowing, i worry when this will become to much for an 11 yr old?
-
Does anyone have or know of any george kelly bred dogs that are still on the go?? Had a dog that was half george kelly bred, it was my dogs sire, was the most beatiful bed/whippet i've ever seen.

Hello just wondering how much off lead exercise you give your dogs each day, i am in a difficult position as i have an 18mth old dog to get into shape and an old 11 yr dog i am trying to keep fit for the good of his health??

I always used to feed dry with a bit of tuna day and night, then we lost a dog to kidney failure and have always wondered if the tuna was increasing the protein levels to much and had an ill effect on my poor dogs kidneys.
-
Rob i know exactly were you are coming from with kidney failure, our old dog had this and was put to sleep in oct 2009, it was a routine blood and urine test that was done as he was losing weight for no reason, his blood levels were saying he should be barely living but he just kept going until we got up on a friday morning and he was just stood shaking and looking very ill, he still tried to keep going but by sat he could'nt stand and so was put to sleep at home on the sunday, it was this sunday that the other dog became ill with his liver, it was all very strange how it happened and it was s

Hi my advice would be to get the dog castrated if don't intend to put it to the bitch, my dog was also very aggressive to other dogs and howled the house down when bitches near by were in season, we didn't get him castrated until he was 5, big mistake, the desire for bitches was gone after 6mths or so, but the aggression had become such a learned habit it stayed with him, if i had my chance again i would of had him done as a pup. So my advice is if he's aggressive get it sorted now or it will never be sorted and is a pain in the arse to say the least!!!!

Thought i wld post this seperatley to my post refering to old age, but has anyone else had a dog with liver failure that has fully recovered, i am finding it hard to find anyone that has had the same happen to there dog.

every day a bonus or is it???
lurchergirl2 replied to lurchergirl2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
wow that is an impressive age!! I agree very much with what you say , my dog gets approx 2hrs exercise a day but we let him go at his pace even though % of it is at walk, (while the pup spends her time running herself ragged and hunting!!) but he is very happy with that. Its really nice to here of dogs living to such grand old ages! -
chloe your dog looks super! thanks for all replys so far very interesting reading, my old lurcher is 3/4 beardie/border and 1/4 gh, was and still is very trainable and very biddable, by far the best dog to train, my young dog is 5/8 gh x3/8 border collie, she is also train ing well but is a bit nurotic,i don't know if this down to the fact she is a bitch or not?? she hasn't done much hunting yet due to the fact we dont have many rabbits on the go up here in the north of scotland, she is not a keen jumper, and like mentioned can be as happy with a stick!! She is only 18mths so time yet!! my old

every day a bonus or is it???
lurchergirl2 replied to lurchergirl2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yeah thought someone would ask that question, and i can say slow but good, he eats well twice a day, is walked for anything up to 2 hrs a day without complaining and is still reasonably fit and happy to play with our young dog of 18mths. He gets stiff at night like any old dog, but i have never looked at him yet and thought he's had enough, to be honest he just keeps going and we will keep it that way until he refuses food and exercise!!
