  1. RM2508 The name of the section says.......Wildlife and General Photography-Discuss wildlife sightings and topics from mammals to birds..including photography .

Well it is good to know that it was probably magpies then because atleast I can say I got some revenge! I still have some suspicions of a mink hanging around though as there is just almost no small water fowl life, just the odd coot, duck and those bloody canadas! Does anyone know of what other signs I could look for as evidence of mink? Because although I cant see or trap them I am sure there must be one hanging around, and a female with young were spotted just half a mile away last summer.... :hmm:

    Thankyou

  2. Well ive had 3 fenns down around the lake for almost a week now and I have caught nothing, caught 7 magpies is the larson trap by the lake though so thats something! lab-tastic I didnt know coots killed ducklings, ive heard rumours of moorhens doing so but never knew whether to believe it...

  3. maybe squirrel if there is trees that overhang

Definately not a squirrel, no way of them getting to the island..I havent seen any rats about there either, what do people think of mink?

Any signs of birds killed or any fish eaten?. If not then i'm still going with crow

The lake isnt stocked with fish but thought it may be a mink as I have not been seeing the usual amount of birdlife on the lake recently, there seem to be alot less coots, moorhens and duck! I did find feathers and remains of a coot and tufted duck on the side of the lake though this could have been a fox as apposed to mink, I also found a dead mallard duckling of about a week old floating in the lake but it didnt have any signs of being killed by a mink or fox. I have never actually seen a mink here though one with yound was spotted last summer less than a mile away.

The only reason I thought that it wouldnt be a crow was that the egg shells were right underneath low hanging brambles and I would have thought a crow would feel safer eating them out in the open, where it could fly off should danger arise but I dont know.

  4. I found 4 tufted duck eggs on the island of a small lake today which had been predated, they were spread across an area underneath a low bush on the island and no nest was visable. Each egg had a whole of on one side where presuably the contents had been sucked out. Now as it was on an island it couldnt be a fox, so I suspect either a crow or mink...any ideas? Thanks

  5. You say you only had the gun 2 weeks ? I would take it straight back in the morning and get the seals changed ( get em all done for your trouble ) . If its brand new it will have the AT fitted and really should`nt have leaked , and also make sure its only filled to 190 MAX ( unless regged then about 210 ) , although AA guages are notoriously `vague` you should always go from the bottle`s guage .

Thanks, i am going to take it back tomorrow, there is a three month warranty on it thankfully! And it was bought second hand

  6. I had planned to go shooting the young rooks up the rookery today with a mate so i got my gun filled up at the gun shop yesterday, where the guy filled it up to 200 bar.

When i got home i fired 10 shots to zero the rifle and put the gun back in its case, the pressure gauge still read 200 bar.

When i arrived at the rookery this morning i looked at the pressure gauge on the rifle just take make sure, and i was horrified to find that it now read just under 50 bar!Anyway i put this down to a broken pressure gauge which i was pissed off about because i only bought the gun 2 weeks ago and i have been careful not to knock it. After a about 10 weak shots the rifle dumped its air to the pressure gauge was obviously not broken and air must have leaked out.

What do other people think may have happened, i thought air arms s410's where supposed to be reliable.

    Any help is appreciated

  7. Well people, i have just made the leap and purchased an air arms s410.

So far so good, the accuracy is phenomenal and it is so quiet. However having never owned a pcp before i was wondering at what point will the power start to drop and will need refiling, judging by the pressure gauge on the gun. 50 bar??Or less.

    cheers

  9. ive done a lot of duck hunting pal with air rifle yeah headshots only to put it down then you have to get wet and ring its neck to make sure this time of year i'd only shoot at male groups for obvious reasons, your right you do have to stay in stealth mode all the the time good fun tho and tastes brilliant  good luck on your next trip, good hunting :gunsmilie:

You shouldn't shoot at any ducks this time of year, even males because they are NOT IN SEASON. The seaon runs from 1st sept - end of january. :wallbash:

look at the date of the post

    atb sneeky

Yes, i know the original post was made during the shooting season however i was replying to "MickyB" who's post was on the 24th april (out of the shooting season) saying "this time of year i'd only shoot males". But to shoot male mallard in april is against the law ;)

  11. BSA R10 looks a great gun aswell, of course that would also have to be second hand.what do other people recommend, should i go for a more expensive gun like the r10 or s410 in second hand or get a cheaper gun like the bsa ultra or hornet new?
