  1. scottish moorland hares are no test of a coursing dog they are puppy fodder

A few of my pals go up there once a year and totally bag up,from what i have heard once they are knocked off their track

they are very easily picked up,so i agree  you simply would not get the same numbers running brown hares on field or fen.

  2. and the bit about scotland only having small fields. you obviously struggled with geography at school, apart from literally hundreds of glens, what about the miles of open moorland like falkirk muir (moor) remember 1745, eaglesham moor where we coursed in the 70's miles of open land yet on the map its tiny, the carse o gowrie where theres hardly a fence between perth and dundee, go north west the open hills around torridon, shieldaig and applecross would test the best of any breed, go right to the top of the country anywhere on the map that says forest is miles of broken moorland. i could go on.

Why!!! What happened at 1/4 to 6? (Take your time) :D

  3. mine goes ferreting works the lamp does anything a lurcher does  will mark rabbit sets

 treat it like a lurcher and it will act like one :victory:

i know what your saying mate but some people make out saluki x are stupid,so why would anyone work full saluki

Thats a popular misconception. Salukis and saluki Xs are FAR from thick!! They are a lot more independant than most types and tend to do things their own way which can be frustrating for the owner but they are brilliant dogs in the right hands and as iv said they certainly aint daft! One thing to mention here though: they are VERY SENSATIVE! If you hit them or shout at them they will never have anything to do with you again, you MUST treat them with kid gloves and reward them for good behaviour rather them tell them off for bad behaviour.

thats not stricktly true ,, if you dont keep the upper hand they will run rings around you ..they must know who is boss.and told in no uncertain terms when behavour is unacceptable .im not talking about hitting them either but if they do wrong they must know about it ;)

I totally agree, spot on.saluki's know when they have displeased the owner for example if my dog wee's (rarely)in the house over

night he will not even look at me for an hour,he knows he has done wrong and gradually tries to get back in the good books by the odd wag of the tail to see if he is forgiven, then as soon as he feels a change in my vibe (to positive) will be his usual happy self ;)

  4. WAS THIS BITCH LINED TO KNAN IF SO I KNOW A MAN HOW GOT A PUP OWT OF HER AND IT AS GOOD SALUKI AS IV SEEN.

  5. Ive a couple of questions, how good is the bitch? Is she takin regular 3/'s Is the sire a top class dog? Ive seen alot of saluki's and that bitch is a horrible example of the breed

what the f**k have looks got to do with anything, these are working dogs not the pretty prancing things seen in the show ring

and no she didn't take regular 3's more like 1's &2,s red ones included and mostly in the lamp.

This post is not a "Hey look what iv'e got" post it,s a request from a p.m.in regards to a repeat mating which in most cases means

  9. Saluki based lurchers, do they make good lamping dogs all quary (pre ban). Baiscaly alrounders.

Whats your views on these :)

    Atb maitland

No , they are far too slow ,they need prairies to run on,are slow to turn ,and only catch their prey after running them to exhaustion in marathons, not only that ,but they cannot jump, or handle cover.Totally unsuitable as a base for any sort of general purpose hunter. They are also boring to watch, and unbiddable.

    Does that about cover it?

Not true that mate my, saluki jumps very well and regularly pushes fox and rabbit out of bush and bracken.

Like any dog if you get them early enough, train them right ,feed them right, treat them right, then they are

    right,

If you take some time to look properly at the dogs in the hands of the right people which are handled and entered

at the right time i think you might change your mind, but each to their own mate as long as you enjoy your dogs

what else really matters ;) Ben.

  10. i can understand what people mean bye BOREING stand there watching a dog follow the hare run it down and its like watching paint dry and i have bin to the fen a few times when lads bred just for WIND no urgency thats why a 100 yards slip came in to effect because it took that long to bend the hares

Not quite true that comment mate, most proper coursing men understand that the definition of a 100yd slip means if a hare gets up

at say 10 yds you do not slip your dog until it runs approx 100 yd therefore allowing a real test/course to take place.

Obviously the dogs need to have the ability to do this and is not practiced by all but imo should be.

  11. I never get into these threads for the simple reason that I aint into lurchers. I have however seen a few clips of both good dogs on the fens and good dogs on the small parks most people run. I know you cant compare clips to seeing it with your own eyes, but, from what I have seen I couldnt be arsed with the whole Fen thing. Not knocking anyone or there dogs but feck me I dose look a bit boring. The dogs on the other hand, running on smaller parks do excite me to watch, fast and furious, and doing what any coursing lurcher has to do ie think about keeping the hare in the park. I know I probs sound like I aint got a clue, thats because i aint lol but someone once sent me a long clip of some dogs up here a very good bitch in it coursing and feck me was it good lol, almost got me into coursing dogs lol :tongue2: Have any of yous genuine Fen boys who only run the Fens tryed the whole small park thing n kept good dogs for that type of thing?

Yes mate we did that when we were little

  12. I've been watching some of the coursing vids on youtube and the majority are salukis or saluki crosses wearing down the hare for a few minutes and then right at the end they kick up a few gears and put in the strike, the last 5 or 10 seconds is pretty impressive speed. It's probably a stupid question but if they're chasing something, whether it be a hare or a rabbit, and there isn't much distance before it hits cover do they generally know to put in that extra burst straight away? I've never seen a saluki run apart from on videos, they're obviously running at a fair old pace to keep up with the hare in the first place but I'm just wondering how effective they are at shorter runs?

I have seen many 3/4breds run the same way salukix's are very intellegent dogs, experienced dog tend to firstly draw the hare in and the

settle to the pace of the hare they watch looking for weaknesses in some circumstances the dog seeing the hare heading for cover

will pass the hare sending it back away from the cover and continue to do so(similar to a sheepdog herding)

On the other hand some salukis such as wilburs Katie and star were full on straight from the slip, their is also a pure bitch

on the natural born hare killers (the one with the cumbrian queen)if i am not mistaken taking hares in cow fields jumping, retrieving

the lot which puts to bed the uneducated theory that salukis can only run big land etc.

  13. hi ben,

i only have two bitches, one is khan jihad, x annie, cream bitch

the other is a black and tan bitch sired by my own saluki dog x a bitch by khan jihad out of queen nellie, the bitch is the one you sold to my mate pete, from down boston,

kc name "garden maiden" a red grizzle one,

then i have 1 pure saluki dog, abberan x ficruise dawn, he has been worked for 3 years, ( lined one bitch, the one above) red grizzle dog,

is the Garden maiden bitch "Ellie"

  14. any body no how this dog was bred was just watching it on dvd there now good animal fast and tight just the way i like them

salty was out of a pure Saluki bitch bred by Fred Preston of Rochdale the bitch at the time of mating was owned by a kid called Rossy (Henry Greys pal)

she was sired by Henry's brindle dog "Bob" who was a grey/saluki/bull type of dog,a good "backs"dog by all accounts. Willie Tough bought the bitch from Rossy

(I am not sure willie knew it was in pup when he bought it) Joe had Salty and Willie had sooner, not sure where the rest of the litter went.

  15. its odd, he seems to be getting better slowly which is the main thing - he's eating a bit, little and often and he has drunk some meat juice and very watered down milk - still not drinking water though.

it just doesnt add up... been a worrying week though

here his is looking a bit healthier, a few weeks back! post-43150-0-62830300-1307104104_thumb.jpg
