I feed my dog meat, organs, lots of carcasses and apart from the odd table scraps, he gets no processed carbs other than in the form of treat biccos. I once fed him solely kibble for his dinner and he threw it up an hour later, amazing to see how much it expanded in his stomach like big lumps of fluff. I judge it all on how healthy his shit is and if its firm and smooth and easy for him to pass with no mucus (which often means the body is trying to reject something it doesn't like) then I see that as a balanced diet. He eats a fair bit of green tripe as the bacteria in the cow's stomach serves the dog well too and while it stinks, he loves it. The idea mix is a whole rabbit, fur n all, which apparently helps pull worms eggs and other parasites out of the dog's gut. He'll eat every scrap of a rabbit. Like a magician in reverse. Abracadabra, it's completely gone! Not keen on squirrels, I have to skin them to get him interested. I've read so much about dogs and nutrition, someone told me raw meat is bad for them. What, like they cook it in the wild? Someone told me over processed little beans are more balanced? I go on my dogs energy, his coat, his poo, and while I did a lot of reading about animal nutrition, I also go on my gut. I know what's best for my boy.

I just get so confused where people are getting rabbits and game gor their dogs?? From game keepers or? The only meat suppliers near me are all ready made complete raw meals.. and other raw meat (all 100% raw but)

Im still learning about all this so i apologise:D

You say your dog is fed on raw meat, but you don't say what else. Muscle meat alone is not a balanced diet. You need to think 'whole carcase', with a small percentage of bone, offal and roughage in the form of vegetables and maybe a slice of brown bread. To say that dogs need carbs depends a lot on the type of dog. I always found that my Saluki lurchers needed carbs to maintain good condition, whereas  some Collie types do not, though if they're working regularly very hard it does help to keep them with enough meat on their bones. Fat is what most dogs use for energy, not carbs, though their genetic heritage plays a big part in how they process nutrients. I remember reading somewhere that dogs that had evolved on some island (sorry, can't remember details) were much better adapted to digesting fish than they were to mammal meat, and that dogs in Asia survived well on rice and scraps. We know so much more about canine nutrition these days, and nutrition in general that I can't understand anyone of average intelligence recommending that you feed a dog on something that is processed, mass produced and chock full of preservatives, additives etc. Personally, I want to see my dogs eating natural products rather than relying on some manufacturer telling me that my dog would do better on their product.

    Thank you :)

  5. So ive been feeding my lurcher raw meat for.some time.now as ive always known raw meat to be good nutrition and my 2 year old lurcher has always done well on it however recently i had a very mr know it all male enter my life for a short while and he criticised my choice of food. Told.me that raw meat is no good as my dog is just getting protein? :/ and he needs carbs carbs carbs....i did try and explain that the raw.meat is fine but he wasn't having any of it and clearly knew all about everything

In my opinion i dont feel this guy knew anything about dog nutrition or why we feed.raw meat or anything but all the same it bugged me!

He tried to get me.to buy chudleys classics or chudleys working dog.

What are everyone's opinions on nutritional?

What are you feeding your paws?

    Thankee x

You can buy stripped chicken carcases from pet food suppliers. These are carcases where the breast and legs are taken off for human consumption, so what's left is bone with shreds of meat. I get mine from my local butcher who buys boxes of these to sell to the restaurant trade for making soups and stocks, but with only one dog it probably wouldn't be practical for you to do this. If you have a traditional butcher near you it might be worth asking if you can buy carcases from them, but in smaller quantities. Lamb ribs are a great bone as well, but stay away from weight bearing bones from larger animals such as lamb, beef etc. Too much risk of breaking a tooth.

Hey only just seen this :) I will definitely look into asking my local butcher. We have raw meat suppliers that do carcasses so I'll look there too ! Thanks

That's good, but what is a complete raw meal? Is everything all minced up together, bone and all? If this is the case, being super picky again, the dog is just swallowing mush all the time and doesn't get the physical and mental satisfaction of chewing on carcases, which also keep the teeth tartar free. Might be an idea to add a chicken carcase to the dog's daily feed.

Thanks for your input it's always appreciated :)

Yes it's minced together but he does get some 1 neck in there too but your right the carcass may be good to add too for him to chew. Are you talking about a whole chicken carcass or will any meat on bone be ok?

    Thank you

  8. So my male lurcher is just over a year old now. I want to get him in to running and we are both new to this.

Just some tips and advice would be much apreciated for example are there any particular exercises/training?

Is there anything in particular to prepare him for racing?

Also I know for the showing side I've been told that keeping them as entire males is the way forward but what about racing?

So many people have told me to castrate due to the cancer risk however I'm sure it's bending the other way now? Obviously his health comes before everything!

Any advice, tips, training, websites, books to get me and Loki started would be much appreciated :)
