  2. Out of Town is being repeated on Talking Pictures (ch 82 Freeview) from next Monday 6.30pm then every Monday afterwards. I've seen a few of you mention this show before so I thought I'd put this up for those who'd like to see it again.

  4. There's no cat C anymore it'll be either cat N or Cat S, N is basically the same as cat C and S means structural damage. If it's a cat S you have to get a new MOT there no Vic check anymore, I'd price the parts up Audi stuff is expensive and check behind the bumper for more damage. Cat cars are usually worth abou 1/3 less than non cat cars and some insurance companies can be funny insuring them

The head zoo keeper was called John I think, from memory. He told me loads of tales of catching the animals in Africa, which sounded incredible to a 15 year old Sunderland urchin with zero life experience,in hindsight the stories were bollocks and he probably never ventured past Middlesbrough.

It was John Howard if I can find it again I'll try and put a link to the article, there's a picture iirc

Those lion were standard lions, bought 50 years ago,I worked at the park for a week as a kid saw the lions often as a visitor, were jag lion around back then?Spotted lion with rosettes were a thing back in Africa in the 1930’s,rarities but they existed, though not nowadays.

I remember going there as a kid in the early 70's, if you went by on the bus you used to be able to see the Giraffes from the the top deck. There was something in the local paper last year (Evening Chronicle iirc) for the 50th anniversary and I'm sure it said most of the animals were bought from (Jimmy?) Chipperfields Circus. It was closed in 1980 due to rising costs and is slowly being covered in houses.

Not sure what you mean regards debt paid and too late for what? Health is a big one , I live an unhealthy lifestyle contracting, but plan to find something closer to home, plus hoping the missus starts earning well in a few years so I can enjoy a 40 HR week and be local. As for now , enjoy what I've got and life is what happens whilst you make plans and all that....

Sorry I didn't make that very clear, I planned to do the same as you once I was debt free I was going to cut my work hours and take things easier. As for the health I've left it too late because I don't think I will be able to keep working much longer,. I'm off sick today (and tomorrow) and I'm not one for missing days off work but the back, knees and other problems are just getting worse. Up until I turned 50 the I'd had 10 days off sick, that included 3 days when I chopped my finger end off and 3 when I went through the windscreen off a truck,I was asleep in the passenger seat when my brother rolled it.

Very good video, I like to think I know what's important in life, drive a cheap car , spend too much on food and drink lol. But don't live particularly extravagantly. One thing though is I don't really enjoy my job, it gotten better as I've taken on other tasks but it's financially rewarding, its one of those I think my mind set isn't always the jolliest but I'm not one of the moaners in work and try to avoid them tbh. I live for the weekend but really looking forward to owning a place so I can show my Kidd's how to make/build design stuff, that's my life goal. As for hobby's and interests, I enjoy a bit of a hunt with the dogs and socialising with friends but I don't feel I've any passions tbh there's nothing in my life that I think God I can't wait to get out and do that or anything, I do envy people that have a strong passion for fishing or wood work or whatever, maybe I'm just a miserable b*****d though...

You've pretty much described me. I stayed too long in a poorly paid job before getting back into driving now I'm debt free, house is rented and the cars a £500 banger. I planned to get part time work once the debt was paid but I'm nearly 55 and the healths not the best and I think I've left it too late. I love books but apart from that I've got no real interest in anything, back in the day I was never in the house, most weekends I'd be at a car show or race meeting (banger racing mostly) or in the garage messing about with an old Ford now it's on the couch reading.

Well I never knew that was the reason mate.i thought they just wanted there name in the front window..there's a few road wagons where I'm working who have them..

Its surprisingly easy to miss a truck heading in the opposite direction. I've missed some of our lads waving at me and there trucks are the same colour/type as mine and my mates haven't spotted me

I never said Brexit was the only factor I said it's a contributing factor for this current shortage and crisis.

And of course it's bad planning, the government should have been prepared for EU migrants leaving the country after Brexit.

Anyway, what's wrong with any short term hardships if they go on to being long term benefits.

It just makes me laugh that we are now begging for 5000 foreigners to come help us get out the shit, tough titty if you ask me.

Yeah I misread that bit sorry. I suppose technically the drivers going home because of brexit is a factor. The tanker driver jobs always used to be dead man's shoes till BP etc farmed out there haulage, apparently the new MD finished a lot of drivers and pissed off  a lot of others so they started voting with their feet.

Anybody thinking of returning to driving or getting a licence I wouldn't bother honestly it's a crap job, it's mentally exhausting you're treated like crap and it's long hours. At my last place 3 of the fork lift drivers were ex hgv and took a pay cut just to get off the road

What do you think of some lorry drivers you see that have there names on a number plate and placed inside the front window on display..

Not sure on the legality of it but its just so you can spot your mates coming the other way, all trucks look the same these days I've no intention of putting a plate in my window but I've got no problem with them that do

So basically you're saying there's a shortage mate and EU migrants were filling those positions. Now they have left there's even more shortages and it's now having a knock on effect.

I'm saying since there was a shortage long before brexit and there's a shortage in Europe so you can't blame brexit, bad management maybe the government knew it was coming and should have either improved conditions or encouraged more people into the industry. The drivers returning to Europe could have been given work visas and encouraged to stay, I worked with a couple of Polish lads at my last firm they were 2 good lads, good workers and good drivers and they stayed here so it must have been possible.

Don't talk daft mate, let's not pretend that Brexit hasn't scared off a lot of EU drivers that has now left a big shortage.

If we needed EU drivers before brexit that means there was already a shortage of homegrown drivers. I'm an hgv driver, my dad was a driver and most of my mates are drivers the shortage is nothing to do with brexit, its to do with the poor pay and conditions we've had for years. Instead of paying and looking after the drivers we had employers decided to get cheap labour from elsewhere. The big wages they talk about are for 50/60 hour weeks and some include weekends and Bank Holidays at standard rates. There's a driver shortage in Europe as well what's that got to do with brexit, France are starting a scheme to improve standards for drivers, better parking etc.

Just read that they have sent almost a million letters out to those who hold a HGV licence and are out of the industry.

I got mine today telling me about the excellent opportunities in the HGV sector and the improving pay and conditions. They must be sending them to all hgv licence holders cos I'm a driver already

We have all had this conversation many times I guess and I had it with a good pal of mine a couple of years back.

He is a very successful bloke, employs about 100 people and does very well, anyway we was out for a bite to eat and he says “There’s no excuse for anyone not to have a job round here” (south east Essex)

So I say “No mate, you haven’t thought it through”

    And here’s why:

Some lads will always be the forklift driver, there’s nothing wrong with that, the world needs forklift drivers just like it does doctors and solicitors and window cleaners and all the rest……but the fact is, that’s what some lads will be, they don’t have the qualifications or the skill to be more than that…….and that only a pays so much……let’s say it’s £400 a week.

If that lad has a wife and 2 kids he needs at least a 2 bedroom gaff, round my old way that’s £1800 a month rent.

So he takes home what after tax ?….£350 ?

His rent is £450, so he is 100 quid a week down to start

He has to drive to work and run a car, that’s another 75 quid a week when you take insurance and fuel and tax and servicing into account

Council tax is 90 quid a week

He wants his wife to raise his kids, a noble aim imho so she is at home let’s say

Water rates 25 or something ?

Electric and gas 50 let’s say

Parking permit for his house 5

Food for the family, let’s say it’s cheap and it’s 150

Clothes and uniform for the kids 20

Few bits for him and the wife 20

(Not exactly living his best life here is he ?)

So that lad is a monkey a week down every week…….he just can’t afford to work !
That’s the crime……he wants to, he would if he could live by doing it but he can’t.

Thats just plain wrong and it’s not his fault.

That's exactly what's wrong with the benefits system you should never be financially worse off than someone not working

These people need help not retribution !
Not digging you out mate but that type of talk is a bit of a British disease…..what about people who don’t fit neatly into “the system” ?

People with disability’s or disabled kids or limited skill & earning potential ?
What about the people who don’t want someone else looking after their kids all hours of the day ?

People used to be able to have a parent stay home with their kids and that was a much better country then compared to now where folks have to have two people knocking their bollocks out to stand still.

That wasn’t created by people on benefits, that was created by politicians.

Sounds fantastic as a sound bite but it’s not reality and it’s just a plain unkind way to think about folks.

If they are ours and they need help, let’s take care of them imho

It's maybe too broad a statement l mean the layabouts that are perfectly capable of working who choose to be on the dole. I've had a dodgy back/knees/kidneys for years, as well as various other health problems (Inc depression/anxiety). I've worked most of my life but I'm 54 now and the time is coming when I'll be one of those people who need help, I've just started driving a tipper because its easier than dragging the (upto) 1 tonne pallets around that I did in the last Job. As for having a dig you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that so no problem from me mate.

  17. I'm a class 2 driver on for a pallet network been back on it coming up 2 years, my advice is don't bother I'm doing 11/12 hour shifts Inc, travel to work your out the house 13 hours a day. The moneys crap unless you do supermarkets then it's shifts. As other people have said the planners are useless we have 3 one's a car driver the other 2 don't drive at all I go to places in my truck (Farms usually) down tracks I wouldn't go down in my jeep but if you get stuck it's your fault
