Missie 1
I have an ex track bitch and she is very keen. She lived with my russell just about but I have to really watch her with small dogs out and about, if there is any chance of any small dogs being around she has to be muzzled and will go for cats too. I've had her 3 years now and she'll catch rabbits with no problem but her prey drive for all things small and moving is a bit much sometimes.
lurchergrrl 1,441
Ya cat was fine, I was literally standing right there so was able to grab hold of the dog. She's funny about it, some days she won't even look at them, other days she goes looking for them. Going to borrow a remote water spray collar to see if I can get her to stop going near them. She's great with small dogs and seems to prefer having a play with them versus bigger dogs. It's just the cats. She fooled the rescue into thinking she wasn't interested in cats by using that 'I'm not looking but actually I AM looking' thing that dogs do. I hope, since she's only 14 months old, that I can train her out of it.
Guest Frank
I wish you every sucsess, as it can be hard. But, it sounds like you have hope, as once they have cought and killed a cat, their is no turning back. Greyhounds have VERY strong pray drive.
lurchergrrl 1,441
Ta Frank, I'm confident she can learn. Have to be, 'cause I'm not parting with her. The cats were here first so she'll just have to leave them alone. I've only had her two weeks and she's miles off from being settled so we've a way to go. Atm I've got her on a long lead in the house. She hasn't killed the cats or even really hurt them - but she'd like to!
Guest little lurcher
i have been most impressed with just what a ex track girl can do!certainly changed my views! but then my mother has one whom was a handy dog didnt retire til 4 with a shoulder injury and he will sleep with my cats, lives with 2 yorkies and thinks my rabbit is a toy tol ay down with????!!! the only thing he picks up is my tortoises and brings them back to hand lol, or footballs, he will steal them from anyone! think each dog has its own merits ? but by the sound of this girl you will have a good little worker with the right time and effort put in , i wish you all the luck mate! certainly work on the recall, and a sharp no when going at the cats, i have a lurcher here whom was a known cat killer and she is fine with mine now and still works like a dream, time and patience and you will reap the rewards
