I’ve shot a few pigeons in my time and Ive learnt many lessons, sometimes at the cost of a wounded bird.

 

The head or neck is the best place to shoot a pigeon if you want a clean kill.

 

There are of course other areas that you can shoot to produce a clean humane kill, these being as follows:

 

If the pigeon is facing away from you then placing a shot at the bottom of its neck where the wings meet, around the shoulder area is a guaranteed kill area.

 

If the bird is directly over you, then a shot to the heart will kill also straight away. The problem here though is that if your shot isn’t bang on you will hit the 5 – 7mm breast bone and the bird will fly off with kinetic energy internal wounds resulting in a painful slow death.

 

No sub 12 FP rifle will penetrate a woodies breast bone as they are pellet proof.

 

Regarding shooting out of your garden and it being illegal. This only applies if the neighbour has not given you their permission to shoot over their property. Other than that it’s fine.

 

Just wanted to put the ballistic lawyers on here that pop up from time to time right.
