Guest rabbiter
My self and a nice 3lb brown trout a friend who came to vist and fish We had a fine afternoon fishing for brown trout on the Mataura river which runs just 1/2 a mile below my home ,we hooked a large number of fish, lost a few in this pool but still managed to land about 30 between us both. No talking up , the fishing for the most part is really like that ,but as the season gos on the fish do get a lot smarter and can be alot harder to hook ,but if they are out and up rising its wonderfull .The season is closed for the winter to let the fish breed up in peace, but come oct its once again open untill the end of may and for a one off fee for everyone of $75 you can go and fish any waters. No one owns the river bed or banks ,but if you need to cross land ,nomally if you ask at the farm house, the farmer will point out the best way to get to the river and the best places to fish! The Matura River is said to be the best dry fly fishing to sighted trout in the world and most calm evenings if you go down to the river you can see up to 70 fish riseing in some of the bigger holes,...catching them is a different matter of course..but if you can as I did in the early part of last season match the hatch ,=over 100 fish for 3 days fishing...and I think of my self as just a very average trout fisherman...but I do love a day on the river ... thurso jack 3
he sure was the loch it was caught on is famous for large fish but you can fish it solid for weeks and get nothing! the week before a 6 1/2 pounder was caught i had a 5lb r of it 5 years ago and when they netted it to spawn it they had one estimated at 15-19 lbs when he caught the 9 pounder it stripped his backing no less than 4 times and he had no landing net so had to beach it! heres a pic top left first picture click on it for bigger view, also below is the 6 1/2 lb fish. http://www.hugoross.co.uk/gallery-view.asp?catid=7 Edited June 19, 2006 by thurso jack Quote Link to post
