shushyjukal 41
Hi everyone. I recently got my first lurcher pup and could do with some advice. She is 9 weeks old and her parents were grey/whipp/beddy + grey/whipp/bull. She has got over the crying in the morning and night stage and thats all good. A few days ago she started going tits on the lead. Not pulling or anything just grabbing the lead and jumping up and trying to bite me. When i say leave it she just gets worse and tries to bite my hands and face. Sometimes correcting her works but mainly doesnt! Its hard at the min to go for proper walks as she hasnt had her 2nd injection yet but i still try and give her exercise in the garden to tire her out. I tried testers of food and she liked royal canin the most so thats what she has at the min but she was like this before that food so it cant be that Are all lurcher pups like this or is she just trying to blow my mind! Any comments or ideas of training welcomed.
Tiff 36
I was having some issues with a very high drive pup I got this winter. The problems were mostly ME not excercising the pup enough. He was unlike any of the terriers, other running dog breeds, collies, pits etc that I had ever had. Once I was walking him and playing with him for at LEAST an hour in the morning and a couple in the evening, the problems virtually stopped. It is not enough to be WITH the dog, you have to be active with it, teach it basic obedience, little tricks, they WANT to learn at that age. So if it can't go out because of it's jabs, put it on a leash and walk patterns in your yard, or drive somewhere remote and excercise the pup there. A friend lent me the book Caesars Way by Caesar Millan, who I never really knew much about. Buy it, go to the library and check it out, or borrow it from someone ... he runs his dogs 4 hours in the morning and a couple in the evening. You can't really appreciate what he says just watching his show ... when you actually read his book and listen to his reasoning, it makes sense. Of course he is not dealing with the working breeds most of us are, but he has something like 12 rotts, 8 pits, 10 shepherds etc and they are always working together. very interesting guy, and may be worth the read for you. Good luck!
jembo 0
I used to spray mine with water in the face when it jumped up at me on the lead. He still hates it now!

Tiff 36
I wouldn't want to discourage that drive if you are wanting a working or high drive dog ... she is doing what is natural, and is not getting the proper stimulation, you just need to focus that energy down the proper road. one of the biggest things (other than the excercising) I got from the book was his point about the senses of dogs. They smell everything first, then sight, then hearing. Too many people forget that, I know that I did.

Try Jan Fennels book 'The Dog Listener' she discovered Amechian bonding long before Ceaser Milan, really does work as well I saw the difference in my lot from day 3 of using it, my saluki has come on leaps and bounds using this way of training, atvb Richard
