Police are poised to strike at a gang of poachers hunting Teesside's deer.

The gang, which is up to 12 strong, is using dogs to target the roe deer in one of Teesside's wildlife havens.

The Gazette is not revealing where the police plan to strike.

But the team plans to spring the trap - involving wildlife officers, traffic officers and the force's eye in the sky - to bring the gang to justice.

PC Rob King, one of Cleveland Police's wildlife officers, said: "An operation is imminent. We are still gathering the intelligence.

"We believe it is one group of people and confined to one area.

"We have had information from birdwatchers, countryside wardens and other members of the public.

"We are talking about a group of up to 12 lads. They are organised and hunting with long dogs - lurchers - and a couple of spaniels."

He said the poachers face prosecution under old laws prohibiting pursuing deer and the new hunting with dogs legislation.

PC King added: "We are serving notice. This operation will be carried out this month.
