Experienced dog men/women

As you are talking about a lurcher that is only one quarter Airedale, you cannot for certain say that the sulky temperament comes from the Airedale.

I've only the experience of the one Airedale, who is just coming up to 13 months. As far as discipline is concerned, no, you cannot beat it into them, but I wouldn't reccomend doing that with any dog, whatever the breeding. The key is to find exactly what the dog responds to best in terms of praise, food treats, fur dummies etc when training.

Different dogs need slightly different tactics and a lot comes down to the individual temperament as well. The bitch I took on at 9 monts old (which has since been rehomed to a pet home) was a completely different temperament to Dill: very sensitive and not so pushy or outging. Had I had her as a tiny pup I've no doubt she would be working just the same as Dill, but I didn't, and this is no critiscism of her previous owner as he was away working a lot and just didn't have the time to spend on her.

In my limted experience with the breed the hunting instinct in the correctly bred working lines of Dales is there from the start. It is up to the owner to instill the recall so they don't hunt on too far ahead! Easier said than done. I've achieved this by working Dill with small terriers and lurchers and although she will still work single handed and follow a line for ever, she had realised that the best rewards come from being with the pack.

Let's just say that once she understood where her main quarry is to be found there was no stopping her. She's only just coming up to 13 months old, and I was told by several experienced Airedale hunters, both the breeder and men over in the USA, that they are slow to mature in general.

IMO, you have to be firm but fair with these dogs: they are a complex mixture of nose dog, setter, pointer and there's even supposed to be a dash of Collie in their origins somewhere. Home training was very easy indeed as mine loves to please: retrieve dummies endlessly, sit down stay all understood within minutes at an early age.

BUT you just have to know what your'e doing in terms of controlling that hunt -away desire without breaking the dog's spirit: that side of things can only come right with enough exposure to game in the hunting field. Not a dog for the numpties or 'leave it in a kennel all week then run the cr*p out of it at the weekend' merchants.

I would hate to get a 6month old pup that had never been out of the kennel and try to do something with it: but I could say the same for any type of dog, especially an intelligent one like the Dales.
