I spent a small fortune in the earley 90's with a vet trying to clear up Bumblefoot in a tiercel peregrine. he took a swab from its foot and cultured it and decided the Drug of choice was Baytril, the bird was then operated on to remove some of the absess and litteraly put on Baytril on and off for near on 4 months and over....

After a £600 bill and still on the Baytril the vet said to me "Have you considered euthanasia"? I told him he must be having a laugh and took him to another vet for a second opinion, this vet worked in conjunction with Neil Forbes and another culture was taken, it then turned out the bacteria wasn't sensitive to Baytril at all and Lincomicin was the drug of choice and prescribed, on top of this the bird was placed on a soft topped block sprayed with Virkon, it was also fed on the fist and straight afterwards had its feet sprayed with Virkon! this went on for a few weeks until all the heat and removed from the birds foot and and swelling had reduced, the good thing about the Virkon is the cap of the scab on the bird softend to the stage the virkon could penetrate and kill off the Bacteria from the outside and Lincomicin killed it from the inside, I can't remember now but I think the tabs was 15mg a couple of time a day for a good couple of week or more....

To cut a long story short it clered up totaly from what was virtualy stage 3 Bumble foot, the bird went on to breed many youngsters which are my blood lines now and sadley died last year at the age of 14....

sometimes Bumblefoot can be long winded and a b*****d to clear up! stick with the right treatment until you see a marked improvment and I'm sure things will finally clear up....

I had a bird and I Vet told my it would never fly again 6 weeks later it was flying and another vet said my dog only had months to live, three years later it was still alive. In short Jesper is right vets are not always correct in their judgements.
