ferreterni 29
Had to part ways with my lurcher a wee while back, and regret it. My old man keeps telling me to get a Collie whippet but not sure. The wife has a collie and it is smart as anything she has it doing tricks and all sorts. And she is a mean bugger in scraps with the other dogs. Fast too. But I find her too sensitive for me, I only have too look cross and she hunkers down. All my dogs are and have been terriers, terrier x's and terrier lurchers. What are the colllie whippets like, are they too sensitive? I am not hard on my dogs, but terrier temperaments suit me better, even if I am told the collie X brain is better. Quote Link to post
TIMMAY 6
I wouldn't have said that she was nervy at all really, however she is my first lurcher, so i have little experience with other crosses. I think it probably depends on the temprement on the collie side, i've seen collies look and behave very differently from farm to farm. If you want something to be less collie like, perhaps go for a 3/4whippet? Having said that a mate of mine has a collie whippet grey (1/4 collie), and he's more nervy than sky. She has been a lot easier to train basic obedience than my old terrier was. Just hope she makes a reasonable worker! Quote Link to post
ferreterni 29
My wife's collie is a gem for training, smart as a tack. I just can't gel with it. I parted ways with a bull wheaten lurcher and I regret it dearly. I have a terrierX spaniel that will physically at times be a spaniel, but is a terrier and I have a wee jrt who is a shit! The terrier crosses I get on with, but the collie is too soft. The old man had a collie whippet when I was a nipper and was a great dog, but I seem to get on better with terrier X's. But I like the brains and obedience that the collie shows, and she is 1st class for bushing, will put a new hole in a hedge to get through. Just the sensitivity to my voice that is off putting. As much as I admire saluki and X;s the reputation I have heard for sensitivity, makes me dubious. Maybe it's just me being a cranky bugger. But all my mutts argue back and are stubborn, but know their place and we have mutual respect. haha Quote Link to post
