Guest EWOK
Shooting the 7mm Dakota XP-100 is hard to put into words but, "gratifying" is a fairly good description. While at the Bower LR Specialty Pistol Seminar I was able to put a number of rounds through my 7mm Dakota XP. This replaced my 7.82 Patriot XP and will be used for longer range hunting in the mountain for elk and mulies. While still in the break in process, I put my barrel break-in load into Exbal (Pocket PC - 2650 MV, .850 BC, 2450 Elevation) and sighted it in @ 200 yards. My Kestrel also played a part here with barometric pressure and wind input. Shot out to 600 yards and made a small correction on Exbal. Of course, there is cleaning taking place in this process. The guys wanted me to jump out and attempt 1k with no sighters. I had not shot it at all at this distance, so I put 26.25 MOA in and 2 MOA in for wind (but I accidently clicked in 2.25 MOA) as this is what Exbal on my pocket PC called for. Exbal's info was right on, but I am the one who put "one" to many clicks in. Shooting off a Harris Bi-pod (w/Pod-Lok) and a small leather bag filled with crushed corn cob media. Made a first shot connection on steel @ four O'Clock about 6-7 inches from center. If I had only not clicked that extra quarter minute it would have been closer. Of course, I was and still am extremely pleased. The action work was done by Greg Tannel/Gre-Tan Rifles (orginally, it was my 7.82 Patriot XP) and everything else was done by Kirby Allen "APS". With the Holland QD brake recoil is basically nothing. -------------------- Ernie "If you think you are perfect, just try walking on water." This is a post on the Bellm T/C forum by Ernie Bishop, wish I knew how to transfer the pictures, dam Ernie, he's going to make me spend some money if he keeps this up. Thought you guys would get a kick out of it. Quote Link to post
Guest EWOK
Just got home today and wanted to show a picture of what the 18" 6.5 Hustler did that David made for me. Wind was at the 1-2 o'clock position at about 12 mph, using a 142 SMK and H4350 with an avg vel of 2573. Out of 35 shots and that includes the sighters I put 20 shots on the plate, then steve and slim put 8 more on it, for a total of 28 hits on a 24" plate with a 4" red dot. I used the Bower Rest System with a 10x burris scope and 30 min in the signature rings. It shoots like a dream David, thanks. This is another one from Mark Sheehan, think he's using a Thompson Center Pistol here w/18 " bull barrel--EWOK Quote Link to post

Guest EWOK
I've never killed anything over 550 yards which was last year, just don't have that many field that are that long around here. But my best shot was 3 years ago, I had drove to the hunting club one afternoon and saw a deer in a field, I turned around and drove back and stopped, by this time the deer was over alittle ridge and when he turned back to look at me all I could see was his head and antlers, 8 point about 15 inches wide. I was shooting a Savage 25-06 heavy factory barrel, but with my handloads was probably the most accurate gun I've ever had, I could shoot 7mm Rem. Mag, cases with it at 100 yards. Well I turn the Nightforce scope up to 22 power, rest the left hand on the outside mirror, braced my right elbow on the steering wheel and since he was at 360 yards, I held a liitle over his head, about 2-3 inches and squezed the 2 pound trigger slowly. At the shot I lost sight of him but felt good about the shot. Parking the truck on a path and walking to were he should be I saw a deer take off, putting the scope on it I saw it was a doe and knew the deer I shoot was a buck. This was a soybean field and had not been picked yet so I started going up and down the rows and finally found him shot just under the right eye. I've been lucky enough to kill quite a few deer at long range(400-500yards), the long shots take even more sturdier platforms, you really need a bench with bags and a good front rest I pasted up a good buck last year at 800 yards just because I couldn't get steady enough for me, with the fields around here, ridges and drop off, prone is not an option and 600 yards is as far as I'm comfortable with off the truck hood. Another consideration is the exact range the animal is, once you go beyond 500 yards that window for error is mighty small and the quality of range finders that I can afford only give reading on trees or structure past this range, a $3000 range finder would make for some interesting talk at my dinner table and I don't enjoy sleeping with the dogs that much, maybe one day. I've read about the 1 mile praire dog kill, with 7mm Rem. Ultra Mag. but that's way out of my league. Well better get off my colleages think I'm writing a novel over here, work can always mess up a good hunting story, cann't it. Quote Link to post

Guest EWOK
Practice, practice, practice that the key, it builds confidence and when you know you can hit him you will. Dam sound like some kind of coach. I have acess to an 800 yard range and have movable target there along with a raised bench I made to test different loads at the longer ranges. Finding the time to get there, its about 2 miles from my house,is real problem for me, so much going on from grandkids to taking a disable friend fishing to trips to the beach to gig flounders, and time just keep stlipping away, dam now I starting to sound like the radio. Got two hour of work to do in 20 mintues....................... Quote Link to post
