When I get mine legally docked I chip them before they go. I believe the law is that when legally docked they have to be microchipped before they are 6months old. I have heard that some people leave it up to their new owners but the problem lies that your name is on the docking certificate and if they don't have it done it will come back on you.

Where abouts are you? I am a qualified microchipper in essex and do pups at £10 each. most vets charge anywhere from £15-£30.
