klarakoi 0
hi guys im thinking of stripping my stock back to the grain ,has anyone done this and can tell me the best way of removing the varnish and colour with out damaging the wood thanks... Hello mate, I do quite a lot of stock refinishing and the best way forward is with a good paint stripper first of all use a tooth brush for the checkering do one side at a time, once all the old finish is off wipe it over with white spirit, then its down to the best bit, tape off the checkering with some masking tape, then you need some wet@dry, I start with 120 grit then 180 and finally 280 going with the grain, and not to aggressive, or there be tears, lol, when you think its as smooth as can be you finish it of with steel wool, once again wipe down with white spirit then go onto staining and finishing, there's lots of products out there for you to use kits like Birchwood Casey are very good, but how I like to finish mine is with bog standard linseed oil, once your,ve got the stain colour right just rub in some oil a little at a time you dont want it sticky and let each coat dry for a good few hours, I normally use ten coats and I will tell you this the finish is spot on, it gets a deep brown oldie kind of finish, and remember this is how they done em in the old days,, well I hope this helps, if you need any help just PM me and it will be a pleasure, all the best, Rob, Quote Link to post
