Guest air gunner
Just how much do silencers slow down pellets? i have a bsa supersport and would like to putt on a silencer but this could put the power way below the 12ftp it does meaning a decrease in the guns performance. some silencers claim not to but i dont see how this would work? ghillies 209
wat you mean by well below? 12fp's is the absolute maximum, 11.5 is classed as 'safe' to stay within limits due to pellet varients in weight,(thats just the pellet consistancy and diferent brand weights), and performance (BC). i used 10.5 for a season out to 55 yards np....in .177 though. the old adverts used to say 0.5fp's loss was borderlining exsessive, today the loo roll mags say 'no loss at all'.... the only way to find out for sure is to chronowe the gun with and without. another 'old advert' or 'general knowladge' was the POI i will be diferent between on and off.. constant for both or the silencers not suited/crap... today i'm told 'no difference'... again you have to try it...some will some wont. just for the side info the 'old issues' of 'blocking scope veiw/light' was a favourate argue ment for the no silencers, today it's a forgone conclusion you 'have a silencer'.. sertainly on pcp's as theyre louder than a howitser with out one..... depends who you talk to, what the 'general consesous s' is and wat they wont to sell you. as a rule of thumb, 10.5-11.5 is acceptable, the ony advantages are at 10.5 the gun runs smoother, at about 11.2 or 11.3 and above it is noticeable that the gun starts to kick more...or the primary goal..tuning to a pellet, which gives you better consistancy with particular pellets which in turn gives a better range with better accuracy NOT THE POWER at legal limits airgunning...FAC is diferent kettle of fish, and diferent effective set of ranges for pellet and gun set up. if your shooting to a preverbial 1 inch group at 30 yards...dont worry bout it ... (should be hitting the same hole on the preverbial 30 yard zero really....). tisnt till you put the exsesive time and effert in that it'll be more vitol, e.g. at 30 yards i can put a 10.3 grain pellet in the same 1/2 inch as a 8.44 grain pellet with the same zero.... at 40 yards theres a big diference, at 55 forget it!... www.chairgun.com.. have a play, dowload the MDRF scope measurement along with the chairgun... if your that serious to worry about 1/2 a foot pound but settling for a 1 inch group at 30 yards...silly hype 'innit'. (the balistics thing aint gospal..theres many variables including gun to gun of the same make that varies...it's pritty damn close though). Edited November 24, 2008 by ghillies Quote Link to post
Guest air gunner
thets brilliant then 30 yurds is my max range so i think a silencer will do the job to keep that sound down. the gun is 11.5fps. thats top input thanks there will be a silencer on there in no time hopefully and if not christmas is coming up. that was the best input ghillies cheers. Grim Reaper 1
Hi Air Gunner, Moderators/silencers work in two ways - making the shot silent, and lessening the turbulent air from around the pellet. The internals of most moderators contain A) a series of baffles, B) a set of spacers, and C) some kind of sound supressing medium. Ok, now the baffles, spacers and sound supressing medium all work in tandem with each other to help contain the 'sound' of the shot - you can appreciate that say, a PCP when fired without the mod attached is really quite loud - loud enough certainly to scare everything else away in the field when you take a shot! You will notice that when the internals are removed from the moderator, each of the spacers should be of a different length to one another - this allows the job in hand to be accomplished effectively. Now look at the baffles and the spacers - again, most mods will have three chambers within them (some mods have more of course) and the size of each of each of these chambers is set by which spacer you use where, within the moderator body, and needs to be of a different size to each other for the moderator to do it's job in the most effective way it can. The secondary purpose is that each of the moderator baffles acts as a sort of 'air stripper' - stripping away the turbulent air that follows the pellet on it's journey down the length of the barrel, and this air is then absorbed into the sound supressing medium. As the pellet leaves the barrel muzzle, the air that is left behind the pellet is a lot less turbulent and noisy than it was when the pellet would have first entered into the moderator body - if you see what i mean? My own findings (purely my own, but if anyone can comment? ) with moderators and rifle power have been that a decent moderator shouldn't affect the power with much at all in the way of actual noticeable effect. If you get a 'cheap & nasty' barstood make mod, then there could be a different finding to be had - it all depends on the moderator, and it's constituent parts thereof, really. Personally, I have the Weirauch silencer on my AA S310 air rifle, and have found it to have had very very little (as near as makes no difference, in other words ) effect on the chrony readings, when tested. I hope this is of help to you mate? Regards, Grim. Edited November 26, 2008 by Grim Reaper Quote Link to post
