advice wanted on a new purchase

i need help on buying a new camera. i've read a couple of magazines and never realised there was so much choice. i really only take photos of the dogs and landscapes, mainly mountains. I know DSLR's are good but i don't want to carry anything heavy in my rucksack when i'm walking all day. Is there a compact camera that will allow me to take action shots (with a good zoom lens) and good quality landscapes that will blow up to around A4 size? Budget is about 300ish.

Look at canon 300/4oo series and nikon 40/40x/70/70s/80. If you can afford it, by lenses with IS or VR . This feature helps holding steady in low light

situations. the brand lenses 18-55 are very light and optical over average in performance. If you can get one of this second hand you may be happy.

Other brands may be good too but I do not know them. The third part lenses are cheaper but may suffer in quality.
