What size cartridge for mallard?

Recommended Posts

I'm expecting quite a few differences of opinion on this thread :whistling:

The old bread and butter Mallard Shot was British No.4 (3.1mm) This I would think has killed more duck than most.

As you are in Ireland, you can still use Lead Shot I believe? And if I were you I'd stick to Lead.

Really, its up to you Pal. If I were to stick my neck out, I would say that modern day No.4 is a touch of dare I say "overkill".

No.5(2.8mm) in a 32-36gram load will be more than ample. Through a moderate set of chokes such as 1/4 and 1/2.

This should give you the results and the Kills you need ;)

It's up to you of course though, I killed Mallard before the Lead shot Ban with 28g No.7 through half choke, same as I did with No.4 through a 1/4.

Try some 5's ;)
