Guest bitsa lurcher
hi folks , i was just having a mouch about the site having a look at this and that and came across a few threads about breeding collie x greyhounds . and it got me to thinking are these greyhounds workers or track dogs ?? another question that sprung to my mind was ..if an ex track greyhound is trained to work , how difficult is it to train such a dog to say catch and retrieve rabbits or hares (pre ban) . do they have enough inteligence or are they just look and run machines kill and thats it ...... and now stock breaking has come to mind ??? and like to hear opinions hopefully from someone that is in the proccess of traing an ex track dog . and finally , no arguments please . the summer is nearly over and hunting can resume ..........play nice
Guest smashygadge
well i have 2 lurcher bitches both of which are first class with day and night work. ferrets a no no .mine were ex track bitches i got just prior to 2 years of age. both were taught to run rabbits on lamp using my lurcher as guidence. they are pretty dosile when it comes to any training hence i think what they see is the best way of improving its mind matter.i also find the greyhound easyier to train to a moving quarry. where as they are more on sight, with head up than nose down. if the dog has the edge of where it comes on comand to name your their as much with the retreive of the rabbits or hare.they do have the tendency to always take of around the first field if they dont hit the first rabbit.so i tend to go down to a training field i use on the way for a good night.they can have the tendency to over run but one of my bitches is getting very agile and can pick them up in full flight and is getting the turning more and more as she is worked.also they are thin skinned they take some knocks at first but theirs a difference between ground and sand so first months you may notice battle scares but they come good.now stock training ive found they have the sence if its not small they dont chase it or mine havent so cows sheep ive not had a problem. obviously if your thinking of getting one for bigger quarrry that would need to be thought of when entering to stock.but i am well happy with the progress of mine they seem to come more out of their shells too given the start they have.and find they have more purpose and more fun they finnally catch that dummy lol and the speed is amazing .and if out i try keep them in walled areas atnight because they will try go threw almost anything
