I have a mate who set a live cage fox trap with full landowners permission. While baiting the trap with a pheasant he had been checking it everyday for weeks with no luck.Today he went as usual to check and found police at the trap with a badger in it.The police confiscated trap and called vet to inspect badger, which was unharmed and relaeased.

They told him he would never get the trap back .

What is the law with regards to non target species caught in legal traps and do the police have the right to hold legal traps .

not sure of trapping laws here but would have though the same as UK (dont quote me), but i would have thought that the fact it is a live catch trap which allows u to release non target animals ,there should have been no problem. Thats the whole idea of the trap.

Your mate should go back to police and ask them to explain why they took it of him , I know I would and they would want a bloody good reason for keeping it.

The police who lifted it may not know the law themselves so you need to get the facts. Give BASC or CA a ring if you are a member.

I am not sure but I beleive there might be some sort of country side officers now in PSNI why not check that out.

I will check with a few PSNI mates to see if I can come up with anything but dont hold your breath.

A mate of mine in Banbridge found a trap on his land, without his permission, so he called the cops and they brought a vet. There was a badger caught in it, and the cops reckoned they were after badgers for dog fighting. The police hung around, and funny enough, a little while later someone came down the yard and headed straight for where the trap was. When the cops challenged him, he said he'd dropped his phone and was looking for it. This person had permission to shoot pigeons, but nothing else. My mate reckons he will be installing CCTV around his yard to deter intruders doing what they are not supposed to.

Shows that cops are taking badger catching very seriously, they were out 10 mins after phone call.

Sounds similar but different area and the fella has permission could you pm me your details to keep me informed on the case please.

Thing is police where phoned for a violent assault near me and it took them 45min?

I thought only dogs where involved in dog fighting, why would anyone want a badger?

Do you live in the area. Was it a live cage trap?If so why did they not think the man was going to release non target species??

Read in the Newsletter that 27 paedophiles where relocated within a 1/2 mile radius of 2 schools in Banbridge.Talk about priorities getting mixed up.

11 months that was probably quick for them :clapper: you know what else you paid for such a wonderful service.

I rang them once and they blamed my doctor for taking so long however I obtained a copy of my file under data protection and guess what it wasnt my doctors fault .What they failed to tell me was that on two seperate occasions ,one for 5 months and one for 4 months my renewal just sat around with nobody actioning it. :censored:

When my next renewal is up I think I will send it in about a year early just to be on the safe side.
