LLOYD 0
DON,T KNOW IF ANY BODY FEELS SAME WAY AS ME .BUT HERE IS MY PROBLEM.CANNOT FIND A DECENT WELL BREED WORKING TERRIER DOG ANYWAY.I HAVE MADE PHONE CALLS TO NUMEROUS PEOPLE AND ALL I AM GETTING IS THE FATHER HAS WON THIS AND THAT AND THE THE MOTHER HAS WON THIS.ONCE I ASK ABOUT EARTH WORK THEY GET A SPEECH INPEDIMENT.MY GRANDFATHER WORKED TERRIERS ALL HIS LIFE AND SO DID MY FATHER .I STARTING WORKING TERRIERS ALONG SIDE LURCHERS.BRILLIANT TEAM.LOST THE LAST TRUE TERRIER BITCH ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO NOW AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING TO REPLACE HER.I GO TO SHOWS AND HAVE A LOOK AND TO ME THE DOGS ARE LOOKING MORE LIKE BITCHES. I HAVE TERRIER YEAR BOOKS FROM THE 80S AND IT LOOKS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO TODAY.MY OWN TERRIERS WOULD NOT WIN A ROSSETTE UNLESS THEY WERE IN THE CLASS BY THEM SELVES,BUT I COULD SAY TO ANYONE THAT YES THERE WERE UGLY BUT THEY COULD GRAFT.DOES ANYONE AGREE? Neil Cooney. 1
Yes, and it was a problem in the 90s too, and the 80s. I'd say it was a problem in the 70s, 60s, 50s etc etc. Where men ,money and self glory and combined you'll always get this sort of thing. Over the years there's always been show men and shows and money men and money. But there's always been honest men too who've kept them right and IMO there's better working terriers now than ever before. I can only speak for Ireland. If everyone who kept terriers was a good terrier man and every terrier born worked then the fox would be extinct by now. Quote Link to post
rolly 0
Neil, good post. I've only been into terriers a short 12 years, but those who have had good ones, still have good ones. If you are a hunter already, then you know where to find them. You won't hear about mine, or many of those I have gotten them from as they aren't show dogs, but they were ALL from hunters. In the States there are good ones, in Ireland there are good ones, France, Belguim, Germany, just about anywhere they have them, there are good to be found. Like my hunting partner says about badgers "Badgers are where you find them..." To answer your question, I don't think it's changed that much since I've been into them. All the guys who had hunting terriers STILL have them and the same names are still being said. Quote Link to post
sulurian 3
There are loads of good working terriers out there. Phoning up breeders or dealers will result in "farmed dog,s " though as as stated people like to make money. Can,t see what the problem is though in having a smart dog who can win a rossette and work .Check out the winners of the welsh this year.Looks don,t make or break a dog , sometimes we all look back with rose tinted glasses. I like my misses to work but prefer it if she looks good to!!lol,(only bit of fun) Quote Link to post
