Nice looking dog at the top there, I got a wee bitch, similar to bottom one she around 10"tts, and a great dog for ferreting.

Hey Ferreterni,

What exactly is ferreting with a dog? Is it when you send a ferret down a hole and the dog waits for the rabbit to bolt?

Hey JRT,

Nice dog! Do you get the chance to work him much? I am still interested in finding out what age that I can expect that my JRT's will start showing interest in foxes, and what age that I should let them take on such quarry? Can you give me an idea???

Essentially yes, but the dog also marks inhabited holes, keeps watch for ferrets coming out, mine can follow the action below ground ( not just mine most can) and mine also holds em in net till i can get there. She more suitable than a lurcher for me cos I mainly work heavy hedges and cover.

Hey Ferreterni,

I don't understand everything that you said, but thanks. I am not very familiar with all the terms that you folks use over there, but I am hoping to learn.

Is "marking" a hole, telling you what hole to hunt?

"Following the action below ground", does this mean that the dog will move alone on top of the ground with the ferrets below ground?

What is "holds them in net"?

Thanks!

aye, marking is indicating which holes and buries have rabbits in, each dog has its own way of showing you, i have four dogs and they each do it different. Following the action, yes the jrt will move back and forward to different holes, and most of the time its the one the rabbit bolts from and when it does bolt into the purse net she will pin it down so it cant escape until i can dispatch it, invaluable quality if more than one rabbit bolts. She has also been known to go mad above ground, spinning in a circle, i wasnt sure why, eventually i used locater and found the ferret had killed 5 ft down under the exact spot she was circling. She will also show where bolt holes are that you cant see, hidden ones or well concealed ones.
