Rolfe 2 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Share Posted June 15, 2008 Just been removing squirrels from roof-spaces again. It is always a problem to estimate how many young may running about inside. The female is usually the first to be caught in a cage in the roof.......or garden. By examining her teats it is possible to get a rough idea how many kits she is feeding.......it isn't always 100% accurate but it does give you some idea how many young are about. The one in the picture was suckling 4/5 kits in my estimation.......i removed 4 youngsters from the roof. Quote Link to post

Whilst the young are still suckling wouldn't the litter still be together hence when you find the drey you get the whole lot. Or does the squirrel seperate them like the hare? In roof spaces with well developed kits, they disperse throughout the roof even if you can locate the nest, so knowing just how many are present is a problem. When they are tiny its different as you will find them all tucked up at home in the nest. Usually the well developed kits scatter everywhere the moment you disturb the nest-site. As a matter of interest the most young i have ever removed from a roof was 8. Also on a serious note........be careful if trying to sort a nest of young and they are using the alarm call..........the mother will rush to defend her kits. Sounds funny, but actually they have the most horrendous teeth and if bitten you should seek medical assistance immediately, after locating the shotgun first of course.
