Radders 0
I'm looking now to installing a gun cabinet in the cellar of my parents house. It's not too damp down there fortunately and i'll be sure to use plenty of Napier VP90 sachets. The spot i've chosen has a brick foundation wall backing and an internal house brick wall to the left (ideal position to protect locking mechanism from e.g. drilling). The floor is a little uneven so when the cabinet would be fixed to the wall there would be a very small gap under the front and the right hand side - just enough to get a smidge of finger pad underneath - not much. Will this gap be a problem. Do i have to wait for the firearms officer to come round and tell me where to put the cabinet or am I ok to fix it and await their approval? How anal are they about the positioning? Do firearms officers come round on saturdays or evenings as I'm not available during the day. Thanks for all your help. Quote Link to post

As long as it is securely bolted to a substantial brick wall you should be ok........the gap you refer to would be no problem. They used to prefer an out of site location as well. A friend has his bolted to an external wall in his loft space. Make sure it is securely bolted though.........the Firearms officer may decide to test to see if he can pull it from the wall. As for visiting times........They usualy call at a mutually convenient time. Quote Link to post
Guest basil46
They are strict on positioning and commenting on siting your cabinet wouldn`t be right as i can`t see the place you are talking about. If there are any gaps around the cabinet, can`t you fill them in with cement? Your FAO will be looking to see if the cabinet can be prised from the wall, so having no gaps will look better to your FAO. Most FAOs work evenings as its the most likely time people are in. basil. A very small space underneath - but as it would be bolted to the floor and the wall it would be almost impossible to prize off. I'll take your advice and try and fit it as well as possible - if the FAC isn't happy then they can advise precisely where would be better. I'd rather have it fitted and safe even if it does take longer to get the SGC. Thanks Basil. Quote Link to post
Radders 0
Now fitted - solid as a rock and gaps all sealed up where possible. Worked up a sweat whilst doing it. Now to get my application in. Quote Link to post

Good luck with your application. It`s always little things which get in the way. Putting things right now may save a couple of weeks waiting for that SGC. basil. Quote Link to post
Geoff.C 0
Good luck Radders, hope you soon get sorted with your SGC. When you are equipped and shooting clays etc. I know you are taking your dad for a blast. For information,I was reading this morning in the new "Pull" magazine (CPSA), about the Oxford Gun Company. They are based at Oakley, Bucks. www.oxfordguncompany.co.uk 01884 238 308 Doug Florent who instructs there, has taught arthritics, wheelchair shooters and one armed people. So if your dad does decide he wants to do a bit more than have a go occasionally, you could do worse than have a day out at the OGC. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Good job mate, It takes a fair while off the process if you install things ready. Good luck with everything and hopefully it wont be took long before you have your SGC and can get your dad out to have a go too. Good Shooting SS Quote Link to post
Radders 0
Thank you all for your encouragement and thanks to Geoff for the specific advice for my Dad, I broach the subject gently with him once I've made some enquiries. Thanks again. Quote Link to post
