katecampbell01 0
Hey, just looking for a wee bit of help on something thats been troubling me! It's not about HOW to breed, cos ive done that before but more so WHAT to breed, i have just retired my nice wee border bitch who has never once failed me, she was a carefull kind of bitch but has had a few teeth knocked out with tussles with foxes so not too carefull if you get my drift! But anyway i bred her to a red rough coated patterdale and got Nugget a black rough coat half border half patt! So the time has come i want to get a litter off my pure patt bitch of Nuttal breeding (or so ive been told bu the guy was quite genuine so i'll go with that!!) I'll mabye get a pic up and you can see for yourself. Anyway turns out the local terrier guy for my hunt owned m,y patt Midge's mum, and she was that bloody hardy that she had to be retired at three years old! So the question lies should i breed Nugget to Midge and have 3/4 patt to 1/4 border, and mabye wise the pups up a bit? Also the folk who are buying the pups want something a little more tame, as they are gamekeepers ect and need something steady to pheasants, and i wouldn't mind getting a bit of my old border back, the thing is though a mate now owns Nugget and has never tried him on fox, he is ace on rats and shows plenty of kill and his mother was sound, so do you think i should breed these two or am i likely to get crap? Should i just go for pure patterdale but try and find a slightly more sensible dog?? Cheers for your help folks!!! Quote Link to post
dogga 1
depends what you want them to work!basically nugget is unproven for earth work (you didnt actually say whether your patt bitch is a proven earth dog either ) so you are breeding at least one unproven dog so if you look along the lines that worker to worker does not give you 100%working pups then what will breeding 2 unproven dogs bring?most terriers will kill rats its just whether they have enough ...courage to continually face something that can give it back!and keep doing it through out their working life.as for the fact that someones dam or sire was agood dog that doesnt really mean anything as every dog is different and the best workers in the world can and will still throw duds!just my opinion james t Quote Link to post
RAPID 7 1
it depends on what you want them for if you intent to use them on foxes it would make sense to put 2 proven fox dogs together and try to get the best pups you can. Quote Link to post

As for any dogs killing rats ive seen terriers that won't touch em! Even some dogs that worked fox like a demon turned there nose up at em! And some terriers that just dont touch anything at all... now that's CRAP! LOL Don't doubt the ratting dogs they're hardy too! Quote Link to post
