yellow belly 0 Posted April 20, 2008 Report Share Posted April 20, 2008 i've read in the Shooting Times this week their artical on homeloading shotgun cartridges, it was quite informative and has made me think about starting to homeload my own cartridges. but my question is this, in the artical they have mentioned about needing an explosives licence to be in posesion of black powder, it goes on to say that to gain one is quite easy if you have a SGC, but it does not go on to say where to apply or how to! could anyone who homeloads please fill in the blanks? Don't know much about this, but from the little I do know, black powder is not what you will be wanting in your shotgun as black powder is for the older type shotguns like muzzle loaders. The modern shotgun uses nitrocellulose powders being a flake appearance which are a different kettle of fish. I think you can hold 5 lbs of this and will not require an explosives licence - but I very much stand to be corrected. Peter Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0 Posted April 20, 2008 Report Share Posted April 20, 2008 To obtain an explosives certifiacte you will need to either download a form from here http://www.met.police.uk/firearms-enquiries/forms.htm or ring your licensing dept for a form. This is only if you want to purchase and keep black powder only. You are allowed 5kg of Nitro Powders which is more than you will need at one time by far. Most are sold in 1lb tubs from the States. I homeload shotgun cartridges for ducks and geese with mainly steel but some Bismuth for my 8bore, I have an explosives licence as thats what I use in the 8. There have recently been some new regulations regarding the storage of Black Powder, as i have not renewed my license yet I dont know what they are. Mine are stored in a wooden box in the garage, which has compartments for small tubs of BP, each container must have no more than 550 grams of BP in it.
