Ratting in the snow

Phil Wright & I were invited out ratting by someone who has just been given charge of pest control on a local rough shoot but yesterday it was called off because of the snow  We had a look up there today instead :D the snow was a still a bit of a hinderance, not to mention the cover that had been purpose-built in the release pens, making the job in hand nigh on impossible

We could see rats running around underneath, quite a few of them, but no sooner had we moved the branches to somewhere else they had moved on and escaped

Smoking them didn’t work, no rats bolted at all, though it probably killed a few

This little pup was on her first ratting trip, she really seemed to enjoy herself

We decided to come back another day when the snow had disappeared to have another look round, and a rethink on how to approach it (any suggestions welcome :11: )

we made our way back to the farm for a mooch about which was a whole lot easier :D

Not a hugely successful day, but enjoyable and we’ve been invited back up there next week for a spot of lamping in the barns :clapper:

And the pup thoroughly enjoyed her first ratting trip :good:

Im not embarrassed in the slightest Millet, why should I be? If we'd got none, then Id have said so. I already said we didnt get many- it wasnt the easiest of places to take pics at all  maybe I shouldnt have bothered

ive never been ratting before in such a difficult spot.the pics dont the place justice.

thats why i enjoyed it so much,it was hard for the terriers to get anywhere near the rats.

i can go out and catch as many rats in a few minutes at night but today was good hunting.

and the company wasnt too bad either :11:

As Phil says its difficult to actually show what we were up against, to say it was daunting is an understatement, but the dogs got stuck in, and we kept ourselves busy shifting branches from one place to another :11: :11:

the dogs got a bit of sport, they really enjoyed themselves, especially the 5 month old pup :D

and the good news is the shoot captain has given permission to remove all the branches and stuff in the pen to give us more of a chance of some proper pest control :D so we'll be back :good:
