Nesting birds & Larsens???

When i first moved in where i am now there where no songbirds but dozens of magpies etc and cats.Last year i got 18 magpies but the swallows that nested in the roof left.I don t know why but you would nt believe the numbers of songbirds about now but i was wondering did the presence of my larsen scare away the swallows?I have my larsen ready just waiting on a call bird but i have great tits nesting in a nest box just over from it and was wondering does the presence of the call bird make them think twice about their spot.

The answer to your question is yes............the presence of a natural predator in the vicinity of any birds nest will certainly deter them from nesting in that area.

Thanks Rolfe i just caught a magpie this morning,theres not as many about i have only seen the one pair in a large tree across the way ill leave it for another few days then move it before the swallows and house martins come back,

Any chance you could show me the type of nesting box you have pip?

i have a number of great/blue`s feeding in my garden, been wanting to make a nest box but don`t think the ones you see for sale are up to much and i doubt if they will even get used, so i`m not going to use that design.

Cheers john, had to adjust a few things as i had a limit to the material, but all in all i think it turned out ok

just hope they use it, don`t matter if not, the bairn loved watching me make it so i think she might want it for her self

Exactly the same ,think theres a 29 or 31 mm hole the greats are trying to move in but are chipping away around the hole so not sure whether they re personnalising it or just can t fit?Got them of an old neighbours trees ,he just died and the place is sold for houses.
