wounded quarry

Recommended Posts

A situation happened last night which Im not sure of the legal position .

I was supposed to meet a lad to go lamping with but he phoned me last minute and cried off because of the rain?

Our method of lamping this particular farm is to take the 222 and the lurcher.Obviously this needs 2 people ,1 to hold the dog on slip and the other to shoot. The lad with the lurcher does the lamping.Fox control was the reason for the visit.

I decided on a walk round on my own with the rifle but found Id forgot the lamp to rifle attachment. Anyway ,carried on round with the lamp and rifle, got 2 fields away and saw a fox .Pointless squeaking here as they have heard most things.I was right with the wind so stalked as close as poss with the red filter.Got to within maybe 70 yds and knelt down to take the shot off the bypod.Had to clamp the lamp to the bypod with my left hand. The shot was well low on the fox ,possibly due to the unfamiliar setup as I normally use the clulite on top the rifle. The fox ran to the right about 30yds ,stopped ,fell over, then drew some strength from somewhere and made it to a thick bramble bush nearby.Ran over and shone the lamp in ,I could see him but it was very thick and I couldnt get a propper view through the scope and he was still moving.

Decided to take a gamble and ran for the truck and the lurcher.Left the gun in the truck.Ran back to the spot and got the dog in.No fox. The dog came out the other side and moved off to another patch of cover,a thick overgrown ditch, where she found the fox on its last legs.

Walking back to the truck I saw a motor pull up by the side of mine.I was only 100yds away and recognised the farmers Hilux.BUT WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THIS WAS THE OLD BILL ,CAUGHT WITH LAMP,LURCHER AND FOX.Can dogs be used to hunt up and kill wounded foxes?
