Lamping, turned out good in the end

Recommended Posts

Went lamping again last night with my mate "dog", his girlfriend, son, old dog, good dog and pup (8 1/2 months).

It wasn't a good night weather wise. We decided to try some hill country first. The old van struggled up a steep hill and started getting too warm, I,ll have get that sorted out soon. There was hardly a breath of wind, and rabbits not in evidence. We saw five hares however, and the pup was pulling like mad on the lead, so it was worth a walk.

We set off back down to the lowlands, "dog's" girlfriend and son keeping us entertained with farmyard and watership down impressions. Parked up down the dead end lane, and over the gate into the field. Ugh. Loads of sheep. We pressed on anyway. The good dog soon picked up two rabbits, it's lovely to see a dog jump back over a gate with a rabbit in it's mouth. The pup had a run and missed, then we skirted around the back of the farmhouse.Surprise! Surprise! There was a tractor working in the field ' the other side of the farmhouse. While we have permission on here, a surprise visit at 2am in the morning is not recomended, so we went through the hedge(where I fell over in the nettles, and the old dog got a shock off the electric fence), up the track, through slurry up to the top of our wellies, (scruffy some of these farms), back to the van, and on to another place.

Nice flat fields these. Good dog picked up another two, pup had run and missed, we pressed on, still no wind. Next field, the good dog picked up another, 60yrd slip! What a dog! I got the old dog on one handy, but he lost it in the hedge. Time to slip the pup again, 30yrd slip, she was rattling it all over the place, into the cover, out of the cover, back onto the field and scooped it up like a professional! Everyone was cheering as she carried it back. Then straight away, the good dog scooped another one. 4.30am time to go home for a brew.

I should retire the old dog now, but he just loves it.........
