Guest Tonedog
I'm looking for a dog that can catch hares well but also can happily withstand roughhousing from an energetic 53 kg bandog and maybe dabble in hunting pigs on my mates property on rare occassions (relatively harmless pigs compared to jungle and mountain boars - obviously wouldn't expect a green dog to have the odd "holiday" hunting really dangerous boars). Preferably a big strong dog. But there needs to be a balance obviously to catch hares. I'm thinking something like a deer/bull x grey, but I'm a novice, or not even a novice something lower. Anyone have experience with this sort of dog or similar and can tell me something about them? Would this suit me? Quick enough to catch hares? durable enough to live with a friendly but enthusiastic and rough bandog? A weimeraner had the misfortune of running into my bandog at high speed while they were playing and it was like watching a car accident. He's always standing on dogs and knocking them over and hurting them. So ideally I could get a hare catching dog that was around 50 kgs, which is why I was interested in wolfhound x's, but it seems this might be unrealistic What's the heaviest dog that can catch hares with any degree of success? I don't mind if they still get away more often than not, I just want to pick off the odd one. Thanks in advance for any replies. It's all grey, drizzly and "british" outside, my favourite weather, might go chase hares with my bandog. I reckon I can sometimes see a little smirk on their faces as they skip mockingly out the front of my dog. They think I'm a joke. Help me out. Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
Tonedog, have you spoken to any lads on Boardogs? There's plenty of lads that keep Stags and have pigdogs too. Disturbed is on Boardogs and on here and he might be able to suggest something Quote Link to post
Guest Tonedog
If I had to choose between hares and boars I'd have to go hares because boars are something I can only hunt once in a blue moon but hundreds of hares are litterally across the road from my house. Still, not getting rid of my bandog. Staghound is a good call, might end up with one, or a stag x bully/grey. I reckon something like this would be up for the rough and tumble. Don't get the wrong idea he's the most dog friendly dog you've ever seen, people have alot more to worry about from him than dogs do but I don't think he could realistically live with some of the lighter running dogs. Disaster waiting to happen like you said. Atleast sprain injuries and the like. He's a wrestling fanatic. Only leaves the really snappy cranky dogs alone. Pig dog line bully/greys in oz can get over 50 kgs. Don't know if they could catch a hare though, not sure. My bandog had a good chase this arvo. He was half heartedly trotting after a hare in the distance knowing he had no chance when he nearly stood on another in the long grass, it started running towards me and I chased it back at him, it turned 90 degrees about 3 feet before running back into him and he chased it into a herd of about 20 horses which went into a stampede :11: Good fun. Yeah I've talked to boardog blokes before, I don't have an account there but I've used my dads for a couple of posts. I got my bandog from there maybe I should just get a stag Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
What's your dads name on there Tone? What's the breeding on the Bandog? Seriously though mate, give Disturbed a shout on here and he'll set you straight on the running dogs over there. If you are after hares then a Stag sounds like a goer. People run deerxgrey on hares over here (or they did before the ban ) and that's essentially what a stag is so go for it. Quote Link to post
Guest Tonedog
Bitey is my dad's username on there. He doesn't hunt any more, used to when he was a young bloke, and took me a couple of times as a kid. He just joined to get me a dog for my 21st. The bandog is about 65 % neo, 35 % amstaff with a tiny splash of boxer and boston terrier somewhere way back on the fathers side. You know I'm pretty sure it's probably illegal to use dogs on hares here too. Just no way in hell I'd pay attention to that though. And I'm someone who's strongly against animal cruelty. REAL animal cruelty like locking things in cages and milking their bile or skinning things alive and putting them in boiling water. Not much more on this earth more dispicable than stuff like that. I hate animal cruelty. But letting dogs chase and catch quarry can't be considered cruel, because whether we observe or not wild dogs will be chasing and catching quarry and tearing it apart. And you can't tell them not too! At least with humans involved the quarry isn't likely to suffer for long. It's natural and sporting because they have the opportunity to use their gifts to escape. Don't know why shooting is encouraged instead of dogging, no focussed selection process there. Even poisoning is allowed in australia and I can't think of anything more cruel. Whoever's in charge of the laws is a retard. I'm sure if you could ask a pig whether he'd prefer to be chased by a dog or slowly poisoned to a painfull death he'd choose the former. He'd probably choose it over a lot of things, disease, starvation etc, all things wild animals go through. Death by way of dog is actually one of the more pleasant ways a wild animal can die. Anyway, I'm carrying on a bit. I'll save it for when an anti shows up. Quote Link to post

I hear what you are saying about poisoning mate. That 1080 is nasty gear. Quote Link to post
Guest Tonedog
That'd be one of Katrina's then wouldn't it? Yep He's a good dog. Mostly for keeping lowlifes at bay. Quote Link to post

Guest Tonedog
Yeah dogos are banned in australia matulkoh. We have lots of mongrel pig dogs which are pretty much the same as dogos, but I don't think a dogo style dog would be quick enough to catch hares anyway. Quote Link to post

Stabs 3
The Aussies pretty much copy the British laws in regards to "dangerous dogs" so there are no Dogos in Australia As Tone says though, the Aussies have been breeding purpose bred pig dog for a hell of a long time now and they do the same thing as the Dogo, so they are similar in all but colour. As for Saluki crosses, I don't think they have working blood out there. Quote Link to post
