Hello all firstly what a great forum very interesting!!

 

I have a 11 month old jack russel bitch who id like to work, ive been introducing her to game through lamping at night with an air gun on rabbits, and she has taken to this no probs but id like to try ratting and i know a few farmers who would let me do so on there farms, my question is how do i go about it and is one dog enough??

 

im a complete novice to working terriers so all advice is welcome, she is a small jack but game as hell, and before anyone starts i know a lot of you frown on jacks but you can only piss with the cock you have!!

thurso..your new to the board mate and we do have prying snooping eyes who tend to read stuff that may be beneficial to their cause..although this is a hunting community , please have some tact mate , it will stand you in good stead...

So how do i go about it then folks? no answer yet?? do i just turn up at a likely spot and let the dog do the rest or is time of day a factor, should i be doing anything myself??

It all depends on the place really,we do a farm near us which if you go during the day you're lucky to scrape half a dozen rats but if you go at night with the lamp you whilst often get upwards of twenty,they stay in the wall cavities and no amount of smoking with the chainy will bolt them,when you go at night tho they tend to just nip behind or underneath something which if your dog will mark them gives you a chance to poke them out for him/her.If its buries then get yourself a smoker or a couple of fiery jill pugs to bolt them for the dog,alternatively just get a spade and start digging.Get yourself a couple of the many ratting vids that are on the market and watch how those boys do it then go try it yourself.Good luck.

Nah the pic is misleading she is quite small in reality, just not got short legs, smooth fox terriers should be 16-19lbs and there is no way she is that.

In my experience the best way to get your dog introduced to ratting is to actualy let her have a day out with sum experienced terriers. If this aint possible, get a live catch trap set up and once u've got urself a few good sized rats. Take her into the field an wind her up with em ... Make sure she's keen as hell and then let one out and release her, insticnt should take over and she should do what comes naturaly to her, on it in no time, once she's shaping up at killing the ones you relsease try her mooching round places you KNOW hold rats, again this is better with more than one dog but as u said in you first post you can only ... haha am not gunna repeat it She should with a bit of luck be marking up and following scents and mooching like hell. Make loads of noise and encourage her for using her nose, '' RATSSSSSS'' i tend to hiss when my dogs on a scent, gets em all worked up lol. Basicaly trial and error [bANNED TEXT] but eventualy she should be rootin em out in no time, Watch them videos off eBay they should give you a bit of an idea. I TAKE MY TERRIER PUPS OUT WITH US AS SOON AS THEY ARE JABBED UP.USUALLY THEY SPEND MORE TIME PLAYING WITH THE CALVES THAN THEY DO WATCHING THE OLDER DOGS BUT THEY GET TO SEE RATS BEING KILLED AND JOIN IN ON THE RAGGING.OFTEN THEY JUST SPEND THEIR TIME CARRYING AROUND A DEAD RAT BEFORE GETTING BORED AND EATING IT :sick:

BEFORE I HAD AS MUCH RATTING I CAUGHT RATS IN TRAPS BUT FIND GETTING THEM THEIR FIRST RAT FROM A NATURAL SITUATION BETTER,NOW ANY RATS I LIVE CATCH ARE GIVEN TO THE LURCHERS.

BY WATCHING AN OLDER DOG CATCH AND HUNT FROM SUCH AN EARLY AGE THE PUP IS USUALLY MARKING AND TRYING TO DIG RATS OUT LONG BEFORE ID WANT THEM TO GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET BITTEN.
