woodchip 2
On tuesday i went to the farm i have permission on for a mooch on i parked my van by the gate and jumped the fence with my gun in its case and game bag i always leave my hard case on the right hand side of the gate just under the hedge its a mark for the farmer to know which field im in its something he asked me to do and its something ive done for nearly 9 months with no problem, and also stops anyone saying i walked to my van with the gun un coverd anyway after my mooch i headed back towards the case to put the gun away and head home as i was approching where i put the case i could not see it i had a look around but nothing then i knew some fecking thieving arsehole had nicked it i was pissed off my scope cover ,new realtree hat ,X2 tins of pellets and BASA insurance documents all in the case. So i phoned the farmer to check he or his boys had'nt removed it but they were over the other side of the farm so i left feeling angry that some git had knicked the case . I got home and orderd all new stuff as i did'nt have a case for the gun . today i went for another mooch and saw an old guy who lives next to the field walking his dog seen him a few times he always ask how im getting on as he hates the bunnies that eat his veggies he asked me if i got my case back i said NO i told him i was pissed because of the bits i had in it and he said so you didnt go and get it back then ? i didnt have a clue what he was going on about he then told me the police took it and that he had told them that i was in the field as he saw me earlier and that my van was still here so i was in the field but because the lazy gits couldnt be botherd to look for me (15 acre field mostly grass with a small woody bit on the back)they took the case and told him that if i wanted it i would have to contact them. so i phoned the local station to find out if they took it and BINGO it was there so i went down and asked the station enquirey officer why did they take my case as it was a marking for the farmer to know where i was shooting and the fact no attempt was made to contact me or the farmer and let us know where the case was but all he said they have a duty to take unattended belongings and that they had attended as a complaint had been made about someone wondering around with a gun . spike 0
If someone had told them you/someone were wandering around with a gun, the AR would've been there faster than you can say "throw down your weapon" I think they're spinning you a yarn, although I don't see why. They go onto private property and remove unattended articles? It's a farm ffs, there's allkinds unattended. They should have checked with the farmer. Is it worth considering ringing plod before you go out - should save any problems in future. Quote Link to post
Opal 0
I personally would not make a complaint to the police. not worth the hassle mate. I carn't be ar$'d typing the reasons why as its gettin' a bit late for me but all I'll say is...my father-in-law complained once about the police to do with his car, he regretted it for a long time with loads of hassle and stops. andyatkins_1 0
Not trying to sway anyone's opinions on this but i can clear up the issue a bit i imagine, when a call comes in in relation to someone shooting 9/10 it will be a response unit sent not ARV unless there is a serious concern in relation to the type of weapon and where it is being used, there is an emphasis placed by ACPO that all items located without an OBVIOUS owner near by will be recovered to the nearest available station with facilities to hold it and kept for 28 days for an owner to come forward otherwise if some states that police have been down, had a look at it, then driven off and someone does come and nick it then they will be liable for neglect of duty... i'm not trying to legitimise what has been done in these circumstances but it is normal behaviour, you can complain and all complaints have to be viewed and listened too but if you have n't informed control that you will be shooting and leaving your gun case by the side of the field then its not really there fault for recovering it for you... i shoot the rabbits, etc on my yard and in full camo you don't exactly stand out and my yard is only 5 acres or so, you cannot expect them to walk around the whole field and try to locate someone who is possibly shooting at vermin, targets etc without good reason and lawful excuse. if you were stopped later on in the day and stated that your rifle case had been stolen/removed they could quite easily check this as all such things are documented and as long as you were either travelling towards the nick or your home then you have lawful excuse with reasonable responsibility considered. if the gun is covered in some way either with jackets, in the boot or any other reasonably sensible precaution then this will be the reason why you would be ok, if its on the passenger seat or on plain view well expect to be dealt with as you are not taking sensible precautions If police were there and have found the case it can't have been too hard to find/or someone has called it in, unfortunately with resources as they are these days we are limited with what we can do and trust me going searching for an airrifle case is not one of them, there is barely enough people to respond to all the jobs let alone go looking for them on occassions. There are valid times when criticising what we do and there are times when you have to step away and think from a neutral point of view were there actions reasonable/proportionate etc and in this case i would say they are but i can only offer my perspective on it! best wishes andy Quote Link to post
SteveieP 0
I'd probably set up a marker like a bamboo garden cane with a piece of rag attached Nice visible marker for the farmer to show you're on the plot & cheap as chips to replace, not to mention that plod is less likely to walk off with it. Guest SJM
Aye they are b*****ds thats for sure. My ex had an experience with them years ago, we had parked up at the beach side ready to let the dogs out and have a wander along the shore front. It was an old doggy motor so we never bothered locking it, there wasnt anything worth pinching in it anyway lol Well on this particular day there was some dogfood a jack and some tools in the back, but nothing to worry about anyone lifting so we got the dogs out and went a walk, came back to find the pigs had been in the car and completely stripped it of everything that was inside they even took the tax disc thats how thorough they were We had to go down the police station and kick up a big stink, he was told that after we walked away from the car, someone phoned in to say that there was an unlocked car on the beachfront and they were worried someone might steal something from it?? Personally I think this is a complete load of bullshit, as if someone was sitting on the benches nearby or standing near the car, close enough to see that we didnt lock it, why didnt they say hey mate youve left your motor open?? Why pick up the phone and call the pigs? Anyway he got the stuff back but what a hassle it was, it took months as the officer that had took the stuff out the motor went on holiday and the stuff was sent to another police station it was a major fecking drama. I think the uniform goes to their head and they think they can run amock doing whatever they like I also think they will feed you any old bullshit they like in order to do the above He never left the car unlocked ever again though so I suppose it was a lesson learned Quote Link to post
DaveB 0
So SJM, you are in fact stating that the 'pigs' actually taught you a lesson and that you now lock your car at all times and because of this crime prevention advice your property will always be safe from the casual thief. I'd say the police did a bang-up job there mate, well done to them. You see, a police officer has plenty to do with his or her time and does not want to go out of their way to ruin your day by locking up your personal possessions. They are not that small minded, believe me. All of the actions explained above are quite legitimate and reasonable. Had either of you guys come back to find your property stolen after the police had checked them you would be down the Nick complaining that they hadn't done their jobs properly. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. So chill out, give them a break and be glad that someone was looking after your stuff in these crime ridden times. Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Well I think this thread goes to show the filth are indeed watching these forums DaveB who joined just the other day and rushed straight to this thread without so much as an intro, just to tell me off for talking badly of the wonderful institution that is the Uk Police force Quote Link to post
