wag 13
Subject: Olympic Shooting Venue for 2012 Games Under present plans over £18 million (at the 2006 bid price) is to be spent creating the proposed venue for the shooting events at the 2012 London Olympics at Woolwich Barracks. I understand that the expected cost currently stands at £26 million and that by 2012 this could have reached £40 million. It is proposed that after the Olympics the complex will be pulled down. I feel that not only is this an absolute disgrace and total waste of money and resources but also that there will be no lasting legacy for the shooting sports. One of the supposed requirements of a successful bid for a Games is that there will be a lasting legacy from it! To add insult to injury the National Shooting Centre at Bisley in Surrey is surely close enough to London to be the venue for the Olympic shooting events. The cost of bringing the facilities there up to “Olympic Standard†(whatever that may be) are surely way less than the cost of creating facilities from scratch at Woolwich Barracks and then destroying them afterwards. Especially in light of the fact that Bisley was only recently host to the shooting events for the Manchester Commonwealth Games!! Whatever money was spent at Bisley would not be “wasted†and would certainly provide a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympics.
