General questions from a layman

Hello everyone, 

 

I'm visiting your lovely forum with a little bizarre request. I'm a semi-professional writer and I am in the midst of writing a story, in the end part of which, two of the main characters embark on a hunting trip. The story itself has nothing to do with the subject matter, but since this part will be important in terms of dialogue and character development, everything else around it will be remembered by association. I normally wouldn't mind writing about things that I have no experience with, but in this case I don't want to get anything embarrassingly wrong for that reason. Therefore, I have a few general questions that will hopefully help keep me on the right track. I'll try to keep it as short as possible.

 

• Ideally, I would like a trip that lasts for about a week, how common/normal is that?
• What are the basic things that one would pack before a trip like that (in terms of food, equipment, weaponry etc.), particularly if there are some common misconceptions that I might fall a prey to?
• What kind of animals could often be seen together or around the same place (e.g. they killed 5 tigers and 10 penguins), geographic location is ambiguous so don't worry about that.
• How many hours of the day are realistically spent on actual hunting, and what is the rest of the time occupied with?
• The season is winter, if that has any implications for the above
• The time period is roughly the 50s/60s, if that has any implications for the above

 

Again, I'm not really looking for any intricate details for any of that, I just need the broad strokes to make sure that my descriptions are not cartoonish to someone vaguely familiar with hunting.

I'd appreciate any input and I do apologize if any of the questions themselves are wrong/misplaced, but I plead ignorance
