My ma-in-laws fat dog has caught a fair few buns just from sitting near the compost heap with his mouth open.

If you're not desperate to kill everything that moves, maybe consider rehoming a young lurcher from a good refuge/ organisation.

There are lots of dogs needing homes, plenty of whom are keen, and just need a patient, responsible owner.
