jasper65 6
For years now I have used WD40 sprayed down the Barrels before useing the brush with no problems but I now have two small marks I can't shift. the marks are about 2 inches from the end of the chamber and don't look like nothing seriouse just powder burns or something simular. Can anyone recommend a decent solvent or cleaner please? Cheers Jasper Quote Link to post
Guest Macnas
Jasper It sounds like it might be plastic fouling, left behind by the plastic wads/cups from your cartridges. Usually vigorous brushing gets this stuff out, solvent can help but doesn't melt it away or anything. What I've done in the past when the chamber/neck of the chamber is very mucky, is to take a 20 bore brush, wrap it round a few times with kitchen paper until its a push fit into the 12 bore chamber, soak it thoroughly with hoppes no.9, put it on the end of your cleaning rod and slide it to the point where the fouling is worst. Leave it there for an hour or longer. Then remove, get your 12 bore bronze brush and scrub the crap out of it. A new or fresh brush will work better. Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
Nice one Macnas I'll give it a try . I must admit my brushes have seen better days! they've never been changed since the 90's . what I was also worried about and you'll probably think this is disgusting is I never cleaned it since last January when I last had a wander! I'm hopeing it wouldn't have done too much harm but I have heard all sorts of things about powder damageing barrels if not removed? The gun is a Beretta Silver Pigeon about 5 years old and by all accounts to have cromed Barrel but I have no idea.... Cheers Jasper Quote Link to post
sounder 9
I once a year scald the barrels with boiling water get rid of all marks in the barrel put some bottle cork in the end pour boiling in leave for a min, pour out dry well spray gun in again and another good clean.works for me.its a old army trick.sounder Quote Link to post
Guest Macnas
Jasper If the gun didn't have chromed barrels, then at this stage it would look like the surface of the moon inside there. Unchromed steel shotgun barrels rust and pit very very quickly. The Beretta SP will almost certainly have chromed barrels. A bit of powder residue will not cause much harm in my opinion. If you really want to be sure, borrow a boroscope off a coded welder and take a close look at the section you are concerned with. In the meantime, get yoursef a fresh set of brushes mate! Like Sounder above, I also do a once a year major strip down & clean in addition to whenever its used. I do a normal clean and then a scrub out with fine grade wire wool wrapped around the end of a bamboo cane. Note, I only do this on my unchromed barrels, I would not go wire wooling a chromed barrel.
