Going to ground on rabbits

Hi i have just got my first terrier he's jack/lake/border mix and he is 5 months. At fisrt he hunted the covers wtih caution but now he's down the first hole with scent that he can find, speaking all the while and wont come out until he's ready! no matter what i do, calling, whistle or food i just cant break him off the rabbits. i would rather he just worked the covers what can i do?

Have i let him off too early or will he grow out of it when he starts bolting a few more? or wikll he loose interst when he gets too big for the holes?

Sounds like you got someone else`s dog mate most people try all year to get their`s to ground, but once they start i`m not sure how to stop them as that is a new one for me, maybe all you can do is make sure he is collared every time you take him out or try and i say try because i know how hard it is to do but find some new spots with not so many setts and keep him that way, but he sounds as keen as mustard so don`t complain too much mate as long as you don`t lose him you should be enjoying every moment of rush he gives you

yeah dont get me wrong i'm chuffed to bits with the fact he's going to ground already just be nice to walk him off lead sometimes, as you said its not that easy to find somewhere with little or no activity especially in cornwall!
