history of terriers in tuscany

Recommended Posts

Yesterday i had a long talk with an experienced terrier man and we end up talking about the first terriers that arrived in our land.

Around 1870 an English man bought a big farm in the Pisa province and take with him a number of so called fox terriers, that looked like todays russells. He gave this dogs to his game keepers and farm workers to control the population of fox, badger and porcupine who were damaging agricolture and quarry. The ability of the dogs was such that other land owners bought some from the Englishman.

The noble family of Ginori-Conti that owned immense lands near where I live was one of the major buyers and even make some of this dogs come from England.

The game keepers and farm workers used to breed litters from this dogs and give some to local hunters. In that time no one known a single word of english so fox terrier was modified in "fosterre" and this term is still used by older hunters for all the breeds of hunting terriers, their other local name that even I still use is"cane da buche"(dens dog). The hunters mated that dogs to local small dogs starting a strain of very game terrier like dogs. This dogs, mostly black or spotted, have been used by farmers until the sixty when most of the farmers left the country and went to town.My family howned thi type of xbreed terrier untill badger and porcupine hunting became illegal. :realmad: Now this dogs are disappeared cos in the 80s they where replaced by purebreed jagdterriers that are now the most common hunting terrier

here in Tuscany.
