whippet retrieval ?

Recommended Posts

Morning, all I do is throw a rabbit skin dummy down a narrow hallway or down side of house. And when they bring back to me they get a treat. If they don't bring back no treat. Keep sessions short at first or I found that they'll get bord and start messing about. Once they know what they are supposed to do. I move into the field. And carry on there. Good luck.

Hi there, same thing with my Whippet pup at the minute. Keeping it in short sessions, a couple of times each day. The main problem i'm having is she has her spots where she likes to play with her toys and she always returns there with the retrieve. for instance if I sit in the middle of the living room and throw the toy / ball she'll rush to reteive it even negotiating some pretty complex obstacles and will retrieve right back to me, however if I move to another part of the room she'll still return it to that exact same spot in the middle of the rug. Its the same in other areas as well she takes the retrieve to where she wants to play with it not back to my hand. I am praising and rewarding for retrieves that are actually dropped into my hand and ignoring any that she drops on the floor, but it doesn't seem to have sunk into her yet. Any ideas?

It did take time with my bitch pal, even though I did find it frustrating at times it all came together in the end. I found using a really tasty treat like dried sausage or something that pup likes more than toy. In my experience when they start messing any playing about with dummy or whatever its time to pack up for the day. That's why a narrow place is good because pup has to run to you to try get where they want to go... If u get me. Good luck. It will click I'm sure. How olds the pup pal?
