Probuk 93
Struggling to get that permission your needing to shoot you rifle.? Try earning your local land owners respect first..let them see your respectable & responsible & most of All show them you can be of some use to them in more ways than just shooting rabbits and birds. Try this...This is my step by step guied to moleing for the Air Gunner. Firstly you will need some of these...The trap you see on your left is the Fenn A mole trap, its my favourate of the three you see here, costing aound £6.00ech or £35 for 6 of them. The trap you see in the centre is a very cheep scissor type trap from ebay, costing about £10.00 for 6. The trap on your far right is a talpex or taplon mole trap, these cost £4.00 to £6.00 each or around £35 for 5 So out of these the three brand's of trap wich is the Best.?...Well, it's All three.!! The reason being is, if you set the trap correctly you should have no problem catching the mole you laid it for. Now, you will also need some tool's for laying the trap..Here are my tool's. Ok, so what now.? In this picture i havnt shown my tunnel probe but il show that in another picture soon. I use the knife to cut the hole once i have determinde the line the tunnel is running in, then i try to find the centre of the tunnel so when i cut in to the turff im as close to the centre of the tunnel as i can possible get. I find the centre by gently proding the ground within the line of the tunnel...usually the ground will slightly give or pushin slightly as if it is hollow underneith..but not always.! So, just probe as deep as you have to to find the centre. Using my knife, i will then lift the turff..the hole i cut is usually no more than 2" to 2 & half"...think thats small.?? it is, but there is a reason behind it. If the hole is to wide the trap will not fit firmly into the ground and this will cause issue's such as, the Mole Can & Will move it, or go round it and dig a hill that will cover your trap also filling the trap with soil rendering it usless while in that tunnel. As you can see in the above picture the hole is ready and im about to lay the trap. I have removed the soil from the hole using bare hands..NO GLOVES Firsty let me tell you what i use the hammer and troul for. The Hammers... Once iv removed the turff by cutting a square no bigger than 2" or so, i use the hammer's to largen the hole, and by using the hammer's the ground stay's firm, in turn this will help keep the trap very firmly set. Make sure to firmen up the base of the tunnel also. I put one hammer in the hole and tap the other hammer to make the hole wider, not even enough to just drop the trap in..remember keep it all firm, you need to be forcing the trap in. I only use the troul to get into the tunnel and remove any access soil that the mole may move into the trap... setting it off early or "back filling" as its called Now lets insert the trap... I do this by setting the trigger on the trap before i put it in the hole. Then firmly push the trap down into the hole. Because the trap is open and the claws are wide open, this is going to cause the trap to score 4 groves into the walls of the tunnel. Do this several times, but as you push in, set the trap off buy gently sqeezing the trap so the trigger frees the claws..this will also make 2 groves in the bottom of the tunnel, make sure there are no stones there that willnprevent the trap closing properly. Repeat this several times. The trigger type disk on this trap should be quater of an inch from the base of the tunnel. Cover the trap Cover the trap as above with grass then soil, Making sure no grass falls or soil fall's back into the tunnel. You only need to cover upto the spring of the trap. Here im covering the trap so its not spotted by unwanted eyes. A tip....if you over size the hole when making it larger...roll a good hand full of grass so its solid in your hand then place it in the relavent gaps to keep your trap firm. What's this.?? Here iv lifted the turff but only to find 3 tunnel's...just fill in and find a tunnel that is straight. The tools are poining out the direction's of the 3 tunnel's. This is the Result. You will All find your own ways of finely tunning your moleing skills over time. Hope you enjoyed reading... Moleing For Air Gunners. Atb Marty Edited June 27, 2012 by Probuk 1 Quote Link to post
